A sophomoric prank put a 15-year-old boy in a legal pickle after he was arrested for allegedly urinating into a ketchup dispenser in a school cafeteria.

A couple of nitpicks about the story:
We really nead a name more threatening than "second degree tampering with a consumer product" for this crime. If this kid is like most kids, he was probably scared sitting in the police department waiting to see his fate. When the officer came out and told him, "You're under arrest for second degree tampering with a consumer product.", the boy probably breathed a sigh of relief. Also, it says that the mother wrote the school an apology. While I intend to take nothing away from that apology and its sincerity, I have to ask what good it's going to do? Make the boy write an apology. b "no assault in ketchup" john13 |

I'd hardly call this a prank. I don't know exactly what I'd call it, maybe criminal stupidity, but prank is not the word I am looking for.

males have grosser psyches than females.
Some males have even grosser psyches than males in general. a few males have no limit (see fraternity pranks) adolesence is the proving grounds |

PLUS, it is all based on anecdotal material. Not one iota of scientific fact to back it up. I'm happy for you that your life experience has been different. |

You know, an awful lot of things we call "pranks" are really pretty hurtful at best and downright disgusting at worst. My problem is not with calling what this kid did a prank at all; my problem is with that word having a less severe connotation than it should.
