The world's largest database of U.S. military records, spanning more than four centuries from the 1600's to the Vietnam War, is now available and searchable online, according to Ancestry.com.

I found my dad.
Not that he was lost or anything.

I need to call my mom and get the name of my great-great-grandfather who served in the Civil War. He was a POW at Andersonville -- we have a copy of his honorable discharge. Mom won't care, she's not into family history, but I find it interesting.

Well, I did just the same thing. I called my mom to get the name of the relative that was in Andersonville. unfortunately, he didn't get a discharge, but I found out that he was admitted to the Andersonville hospital for feeling sick on July 29th and died the same day, guess he was telling the truth. Never knew the date of death until now.

I found an image of my Great-Grandfather's WWI Draft Registration Card, and my Grandfather's WWII enlistment information.

You could always do the one for one month so you can get their info. Or even pair up with a friend and share the membership. After my rent gets caught up I am going to get a year's subscription again like I did years ago. It was a lot cheaper then.

That's a good idea. My DH got on and started looking for his relatives and I think I have him hooked.

I found my grandfather's WWII registration form... an actual picture of it! I know it's the right one because it lists as an address the house my aunt still lives in. He was 48 and worked for C&O railroad.
I wish I could have known him when I was an adult. Morning still looking for all five uncles and dad.

Found my great uncle's registration card for WW1, and dad's cousin who was wounded in Korea. Does anyone else have a relative who signed for WW1 on June 5, 1917? It was Conscription day in the US on that date.

I found my grandfather. Didn't find any new information on him, though.
Slight hijack. Can someone familiar with military records give me an indication of what i might find in various types? I know what division he served in (nothing more specific than that yet, unfortunately), that he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and I've been able to correlate some of what he told me while he was still alive to specific events in the division's history. So I'm wondering what level of detail I can expect from things like citations for the Purple Heart (circumstances of the wounding?) and Bronze Star (I know some of these were awarded en masse)? Also, once I can narrow down his unit assignment to the small unit level (personnel file?) is it too much to hope that he might be mentioned by name in after action reports at the company or platoon level, if such things exist? |

Guess you have to be a dead veteran to be in their data base -- because I'm not there.
