Icon22 Saggin'

Comment: One of my african-american employees showed me a nearly
amusing text message she recieved on her cellphone from one of her friends
at school.

The idea is this: White people are supposidly using the word "Saggin'" in
reference to black people who wear their pants hanging low. If you
reverse the spelling of saggin, you find a semi-clever use of the word
"niggas." Saggin, according to the text message, has become the new way
in which white people can call black people niggers and get away with it.

Anecdote

I see more whites and Latinos wearing their pants hanging low than blacks, but then I live in a high Latino low black area.

That gives white people way too much credit in my opinion.

It's called saggin because the pants...are sagging.

Duh.

Saying "hangin down around their knees" takes too long.

(and my opinion on the matter, fashion wise, is "get a belt" but that's neither here nor there and there's no law against dressing like a ridiculous silly idiot, if that's what they want to do. Heh. ~well, maybe some places there are, but I think only when it gets to the point of seeing too much boxers.)

White kids do it too, here.

I can remember hearing the expression "saggin" (or sagging) in reference to wearing one's pants around one's knees as far back as 1993. It may have been around longer; I was in fourth grade in 1993, so I wouldn't necessarily have been hip to the lingo before then. Why do these people always seem so far behind the curve?

Also, on the rare occasion I have heard a white person utter the word "nigger," the "r" has always been pronounced. "Niggas" seems to be the pronunciation favored by hip-hop and rap "artists" determined to "take back the word."

That sounds just dumb to me. I think someone is looking for something to gripe about.

If I say that someone is saggin' it's because they have their pants around their knees. I see about as many white kids doing it as black ones. I've seen many end up with their pants around their ankles, too

Yup, I've related this story many times here...I was on a very crowded bus that was standing room only. A young black guy with loose baggy pants was standing in the aisle, hanging on to the handlebar above him so he wouldn't fall when the bus turned a corner. During the ride his pants kept falling lower and lower...and every time he tried to pull them up, the bus would turn and he'd have to hang on to the bar instead of his pants. Eventually they did fall down to his knees.

wow.. how clever.. yes us white folk are that devious to come up with that. I remember people wearin theyre pants way down low (ala SAGGING!) clear back to 4th grad which was in late 80's, and its still the fad.

By a similar method, I've just determined that Paul is dead.

I worked in a medium security prison in Ohio in the early 90s. The guys there always told me saggin' came from prison culture. The story went inmates were often unable to get pants that fit them, so all inmates started wearing their pants low as a symbol of solidarity with those who had baggy pants. As inmates were released, saggin became a way of identifying other ex-cons, and the fashion took off from there.

That was the story, anyway.

I heard that, too. Also they aren't given belts, so that's one more reason a prisoner's pants might not stay up.

I did too, but aren't the jumpsuits one-piece?

In the prison in which I worked, inmates wore belts. They were issued a light blue shirt and dark blue pants with a belt. Another element in the clothing thing was that the inmates would not buckle their belts and puff out their boxer shorts. I remember the guards always shouting out to guys to buckle their belts.

IIRC, some guys told me the whole thing started in California. I suspect prison uniforms are a state thing, so maybe some states have jumpsuits.

Text messages are private communications, right? Then why would you need to use code words in a private communication? I mean, I could see using codewords for something like terrorism, but for racism? People are racist in public in front of many people, but are trying to be coy in a private correspondence? That doesn't make sense.

From my memory of a news story from a while back:

A guy robbed a store and tried to run away. As running on foot. He was wearing the saggin' style and his pants fell down and tripped him. He was caught.

I learned the sagging pangs=sexual availability myth from an acquaintance who's an ex-con. He's a pastor now, and apparently he often tells kids the "real" meaning of their sagging britches. On the one hand, I figure he ought to know...but on the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if he exaggerated a bit to get his point across with troubled kids. He's a great guy, but a tad theatrical for my taste.

Honestly, I would not count on it. Just like e-mails they are monitorable, and possibly filtered for certain references. Cultural and racial slurs might be particularly something being watched.
