Comment: With kids graduating, the popular principal response is "Don't
throw your hats, you poke your eye out." Now while I realize that it is possible to get hurt if you are hit by a falling cardboard hat, has there ever been a report of someone poking their eye out at a graduation by a falling graduation hat? |

At least one:
See PubMed Well, she didn't poke her eye OUT, but did sustain an injury. I'm skeptical that a falling mortarboard would have the force required and the right angle to poke an eye out. Did a quick search on PubMed using the terms "mortarboard" and "eye" and this is the only example. Bee

My college didn't bother having a rehearsal for graduation or even handing out an instruction sheet for how the ceremony would go - it led to quite a bit of confusion (nobody knew where to put their tassels and at no point did we move them over like we did in high school). However, the one thing the school made sure we ALL knew was not to throw the danged hats. It was on our registration cards and printed in the freaking program, in addition to being the subject of the last announcement made by the university president.
I did notice that the hats for my college graduation were MUCH heavier than the one I had for high school. In high school we were allowed to keep the hats, and although they told us not to throw them, everyone did anyway. The stiff material inside the hat then was like a very thin piece of cardstock. The college one, on the other hand, was a rental we had to turn back in and was much thicker and heavier, probably cardboard that was 1/4 inch thick or so. Even the guys were having problems keeping them on and were resorting to borrowing bobby pins. The slightest tilt and they'd come sliding off. I could definitely see one of those causing a bruise if it were to smack you on the head. |

When I graduated from high school, the mortarboards were soft and flexible.

We weren't allowed to throw our hats in high school, but I suspect that's because they were rentals. My bachelors' robes were purchased, and there was no "no throwing" clause.
