This is a morbid question but... is it true that the legitimate Steve Irwin death footage is out there on the Internet? I've heard mumbles of that for a while but never saw proof...
Oh, there are plenty of fakes on YouTube, but I can't find any real deal. (I heard that his wife actually allowed it to be shown in Australia, so who knows.) |

I'd heard the opposite: she didn't allow it to be seen, and destroyed the video as soon as the investigation into his death was over and she was allowed to.

It wasn't shown here - as I recall tremendous care was taken to ensure that no copy was made and that the original was returned following the coronial inquest, to Terri, who destroyed it.
Now, if I'd made a fake I would, of course, claim that somehow a copy had snuck out and I had, by various means, obtained it. Dropbear |

I've seen several "examples" of the footage... it is standard Irwin snorkeling video - then a screamer that scared the crap out of me. I've seen, I think, three versions - and all of them were slightly different - but all had screamers.
Jerks.

Didn't the National Enquirer publish stills from the tape? I remember them having a big banner headline advertizing it.

If I'm remembering it right, they had a big banner advertising it and some teeny tiny print explaining that it was a "dramatization" or something like that.

Terry herself never actually watched the video, as I can remember and she apparently never wanted to see it. I seem to remember that she was the one who made the ultimate decision as to what to do with the tape. No one other than Steve's family and crew ever had their hands on the tape.

I don't blame her, and really the world could do without ever seeing it either. I just didn't get everyone being so god-awful shocked and how it was such a freak freak thing, though. I wasn't a fan and really seldom saw him on TV but aside from his goodwill efforts, he made a name staring death in the face.

It was mainly a "freak freak thing" because stingrays aren't really considered to be all that deadly to humans. Personally, I swam with around 100 of them while on a cruise in the carribean, and I never felt my life was in danger. They're quite friendly, and almost like dogs. We were even encouraged to hold a particular one, as the crew of our boat knew that one the best being that they go see the same rays practically every day.
People were shocked because for a guy who did stare death in the face, he wasn't killed by any of the very dangerous and deadly animals he was routinely around. So as far as I heard, people weren't shocked that he was killed by an animal, they were shocked that he was killed by an animal that causes very few annual human deaths. I also think it's good that the tape wasn't shown and that it was destroyed. |

I do get your meaning, it just seemed practically inevitable that it wasn't going to catch up sooner or later. About the footage, yeah, I love gory films as much as anyone, but when it comes to the real thing, I can't take it. (I know some things need to be kept for their lessons, such as Holocaust films and so forth.)

To me, Steve Irwin's death is a lot like Evel Kineval jumping over a canyon and surviving, only to trip, fall, and bust open his head while waving to the audience after the stunt.

That's about the size of it, it seems. I remember when he was getting ready to jump the canyon thinking, "Um, this is never going to work, what is this guy thinking?" (I was a little weird that way, for a kid.) Then when he survived I couldn't believe it either. Go figure.

There's an article in the recent Enquirer about Terry Irwin. Big headline "Widow breaks down while viewing death tape". Or something like that. It makes it sound like she's watching the actual tape of the accident. What it was, if such a thing even happened, is a video of her either reporting his death or talking about it shortly after it happened. Not even remotely the same thing.
I read it for the laughs. |

As curious as I am to see it, I think once faced with it I would turn down the chance. I love horror movies and gore and all that, but it's fake. I don't think I could ever watch a real person die.
