And in that regard, how is castoreum any less "natural" than vanilla flavoring? Do you think that all non-castoreum vanilla flavoring is made from pure vanilla beans plucked straight from vanilla plants, with absolutely no processing or added ingredients?

Anything else would be listed on the ingredients as such.

And significant processing would forbid the food as a whole from being labelled natural.

I don't see what's so hard to grasp: that "natural flavour" should mean it's the "natural flavour of the identified/implied food"

The opposite of external influences.

Likewise, surely there's not much issue between artificial and natural flavours?

If anything vegetarianism seems more reasonable than organic/natural standards.

Why not just label synthesized flavour as natural, since petroleum comes from nature... (e.g)

So "influences" is the opposite of "relationship"? How?

So just to clarify.. You were actively eating lunch and decided the best thread to click on was the one about gooey secretions from beaver butt-glands?

So - do they capture beavers, harvest the goo, and let them go? Or do they raise beavers for this purpose? And they have to *anesthetize* the animals, that sounds pretty labor intensive, and all this yields less than 300 pounds of it a year.

What a lot of hassle. I don't understand why they don't just use friggin real vanilla. You don't have to anesthetize orchids fer jebus sake.

Well, for one thing, almost no vanilla could be described as natural flavour. But there are other problems. Should it contain only that? If so how much? It's a flavor so it's going to be with other flavors. Is 1% strawberry and 99% some other berry OK to call "natural strawberry"? Is it OK if the whole strawberry isn't used but only an extract? Is it OK to use the plant or roots rather than the berry? So I don't think it's hard to grasp just practically impossible to implement.

Snapdragonfly - If you had a very patient and trained beaver I imagine you'd pick them up and hold them like a set of bagpipes - the beaver facing backwards under your left arm, and with your right hand lifting up the tail and aiming.

/Hijack/

Walking through a grocery today, I walk past a man who smelled like vanilla*. The first thing that crossed my mind was, "That man smells like Beaver butt."

*Comedic license. It was most likely something in his cart that smelled of vanilla.

Well, admittedly this was not one of my better judgment calls, but I was doing fine right up until I imagined a legion of pastry chefs using angry beavers as frosting dispensers.

Perhaps if you imagined the beavers really quite enjoying the experience?

Pick me pick me - ooooooh yes!
