Default Arrow to the knee

I know that this phrase comes from the game Skyrim, but rumors abound that it is actually an old Scandinavian phrase that means "to get married."

So can any linguists or Scandinavian Snopesters out there confirm?

The arrow to the knee line was written as a joke by the developers to reference the fact that the armor system changed from Oblivion to Skyrim. In the previous game, armor consisted of helmets, chest pieces, leg pieces, boots, and gloves, but in Skyrim they condensed the chest and leg pieces into one category by removing customizable leg armor.

Never heard it before, either. When I first saw it (on 9gag, I think) I just filed it under P for "People will believe anything" and moved on.

Never heard it.

I'd guess it's cover-up story to explain why it's so common i Skyrim.

It's nice to see three other Swedes here! But I have to be the fourth one to say, that I've never heard about that expression. I could have been open to believe that it came from Norway, Denmark or Iceland, which also would be parts of Scandinavia. But I guess Morrigan found the right answer.

McGee actually references that line in an NCIS episode.

I don't think it's half as bad as leaving a cave with Lydia and having her say, "Oh look, a cave! Wonder what's inside..."

Well, Lydia, a lot of dead bodies, now...

That changed with the downloadable content though, I think. The guards also say more things, so not as many of them say the arrow to the knee thing.

Is she still sworn to carry my burdens?

Also, do they quit claiming I'm still whining about someone stealing my sweetroll when the act of stealing anything will get them all swarming me?

She says a couple different things, one of them is, "How can I serve you, my Thane?" and it's not in a snotty voice. There's also something similar to your wish is my command, I think.

Yes, you still occasionally hear the sweetroll line. Basically, when they added the downloadable content they also added new lines for the guards, housecarls, etc. So while they will still say the same thing occasionally it's varied with other things. But I haven't heard her use that cave line on the way out yet, so maybe that's fixed.
