I thought this was a well known fact. I first read about it on Wikipedia and then saw an interview with Valderrama and other Colombian players on ESPN recalling the incident so it definitely happened.

Ah, I see now. I never thought if there ever was another motive behind the killing other than the own goal. I remember reading a book called How They Lost The Game by David Yallop and I think he made mention of drug cartels betting big sums of money on that game (and several others I'm sure). So it could have been more than just one's country losing.

I remember watching that match. It was very fun in my house (my wife is Colombian) with lots of friendly and no-so-friendly rivalry going on. When the autogol took place (and in my opinion, it wasn't his fault, the goalkeeper was out of position) I immediately joked about how they were going to kill him when he got home.
Sadly, I wasn't that shocked or surprised when they really did. According to my wife's family members who live in Medellin, it was the prevalent public opinion that he was indeed killed for causing the Colombian team to lose to the -gasp- Americans. Mac"they take their futbol very seriously down there"Lloyd
