Provided the person in question wasn't falsly presenting himself as a member of the military while I don't like it per se I don't find it overtly disrespectful and there is no legality involved in it to my knowledge, provided the medals he was wearing wouldn't fall under the Stolen Valor act, which given the circumstances I find unlikely.

Assuming any of this is true at all, that is. And if it is, that there are no missing details.

And that. Only thing I can confirm is that there is an Old Navy at the Orange Park Mall in Jacksonville and Jacksonvill is a big Navy town (3 large bases within a half hour drive) with a big Navy Retiree population.

Well, technically, the Orange Park Mall is in Orange Park, which is a completely separate city from Jax.

I myself am a veteran of Old Navy boots. I would recommend against them, as they tend to be cheaply made and won't last more than a season.

Does Old Navy have any kind of dress code for their employees? Even if it is just a fixed color shirt or apron? Because the person so dressed may not have been an employee.

Also, the SO has a super fast response time if they were able to catch up to the author on his way to Sears if he had left immediately after the conversation.

A Facebook page, stolen valor, claims this came from the manager in question:

Ok here is the response from Old Navy of Orange Park...Seems to me our banned patron was not the only one who took offense..."Sir. Just to clarify and to be clear. The jacket was a French uniform from the 1930' s that was bought at an antique store. the young man thought of it as fashion. This employee as well as all others across our nation would never dream of intentionally be disrespectful to our troops. Unfortunately, w e had to protect our employee because he was earlier bodily threatened by others earlier in the day. We have seen several uniform inspired fadhionable shirts and jackets as a trend lately. Again, no disrespect was intended and never will be. We stand behind our revord as highly supporting our troops with our programs Operation Care and Comfort." ~Anderson

Of course, the people posting on that page seem unwilling to accept any explanation and take the alleged veteran's word without question.

I couldn't parse the title of this thread because I kept reading "boots" as a noun.

Question for those with more knowledge of the subject: How closely would a 1930s French uniform jacket resemble a "regulation green USMC dress jacket, complete with Lance Corporal rank, three rows of ribbons and a weapons bolo badge"? (Disclaimer: I realize it hasn't been confirmed that the above quote is really from the manager, or that his account is accurate.)

[mandatory miso-Franco "joke"]
The USMC dress jacket wouldn't have the yellow stripe down the back.

The dress uniform is is a dark blue. It's not even green.

The service uniform is green.

I am not a Marine but that's how I remember it.

French Infantry uniforms were a similar shade of green at the start of WW2. Prior to that they were Horizon Blue (light blue) during WW1 but unable to figure out when they switched over to the green. http://8bcp.tripod.com/92ri/id15.html This is a photo of reenactors in 1940 French Infantry uniform (still looking for color photos of French uniforms from the 30's but mainly finding B&W).

The French had several medals with a square cross that can resemble some of the weapons bolo badges from a distance.

The OP claimed the Old Navy employee was wearing a Marine dress jacket, and Wintermute's right -- they're dark blue, not green. Image.

I know what the Marine dress uniform looks like which is what I thought of when I first read the OP until I reread it after you asked your question and saw it mentioned the regulation USMC green dress (service) jacket.

I don't remember coming across anything that would resemble the USMC dress blues among French uniforms from the interwar period.
