Origins of golf

Comment: I have heard the story that the game of golf originated for
military purposes, whereby soldiers would use a club to launch rounded
pebbles or rocks into an approaching enemy.
This I know to be not true, and though historians may argue a point as to
when it was first invented, there is evidence of a similar game being
played in Roman times. In short it has always been a game and never for
military purposes.

I've heard that the origins of cricket were bored Saxon Sussex shepherds hitting stones with the crooked end of the crooks. Well early cricket bats were curved and the word cricket may come from the word crooked, so who knows?

Do shepherds have nothing better to do other than to invent sports?
