Icon103 (Bill) Clinton quotes

Comment: I recently came across two quotes attributed to Bill Clinton
that I cannot believe he made (or which I think must have been satirical
comments or else taken out of context). If the quote is true, it seems
like I should be able to find an authoritative source to confirm it, but all I find are
quotes of the quote on far-right-wing blogs, etc. Here are the quotes:

"The purpose of government is to rein in the rights of the people,"
supposedly a statement made by Bill Clinton on MTV in 1993.

"You know the one thing that's wrong with this country is everyone gets a
chance to have their fair say," supposedly by Bill Clinton 1993

Bets on these quotes being moved over to Hillary as we get closer to the election?

She's got enough of her own.

No bet here, I'm with you! But here is how it will play out. So as to not be at all dishonest (heaven forbid), Sean Hannity, Rush, or a clone will say "Here's a quote from the last time the Clinton's were in the White House {read quote}. Friends, this is how these people think." I would call that bet a push, because they won't actually attribute it to her by name.

I think you may have it right. I would "modify" my bet to include your idea. It is then only a little "slip" from yours to mine.

"I heard that Bill Clinton said...."
"I heard that Clinton said...."
"I heard that Hillary said...."

As for your comment, Wonko, the rule is, "There is no such thing as too much dirt on a person....".

True enough, but there reaches a point when a person is covered with so much already that the new bits don't show up as much.

The closest I could find on the first quote is from a 1994 (not 93) appearance on "Enough is Enough", hosted by Tabitha Soren.

Quote:
What's happened in America today is too many people live in areas where there's no family structure, no community structure, and no work structure. And so there's a lot of irresponsibility. And so a lot of people say there's too much personal freedom. When personal freedom's being abused, you have to move to limit it. That's what we did in the announcement I made last weekend on the public housing projects, about how we're going to have weapon sweeps and more things like that to try to make people safer in their communities. So that's my answer to you. We can have—the more personal freedom a society has, the more personal responsibility a society needs and the more strength you need out of your institutions, family, community, and work
Emphasis mine, cite here.

ETA: Here's a 1993 interview with Soren, which contained neither quote.

ETA2: One more from 1995 and 1996

Good grief, will the right-wing blogosphere ever get tired of making crap up to tarnish Bill's reputation?

I heard a friend say that he heard on the radio that Hillary said that if she were elected president, she would make lesbians and abortions mandatory!

And if Obama got elected, he would make Islam the religion of the nation!

We must stop these people NOW!!!!!!!!

If that's what the OP is referring to, the misleading nature of it is even more shameful than I thought. That quote is a perfect example of the sort of thing Republicans used to cite when they accused Clinton of "stealing their issues". And with all the talk about personal responsibility and families and so forth, he does sound more like a Republican than anything else there.

The second quote is correct, although terribly misleading. Seems like he wa smaking a speech and being heckled at the time:

Trascript of a Speech given in Philadelphia in June 1993.

Quote:
(Audience interruption.)

Let me tell you something -- wait a minute. You
know one things that's wrong with this country? Everybody gets a
chance to have their fair say. My budget did more to fight AIDS
than any in history, and we're having to put up with this.
(Applause.) Tell them to let me talk. (Applause.) If you want
to give a speech -- go out there and raise your own crowd. We'll
be glad to listen to you. (Applause.)

So there were those -- (interruption) -- I'll make
you a deal. I'll ignore them if you will. (Applause.)

Oh, it was a joke. Makes sense. Of course, a remark being a joke didn't stop Al Gore from being hounded.

And somehow whenever Bush says something incredibly stupid ("No questions, in English or French or Mexican"), we're supposed to assume he was joking. Go figure.
