site and how often I go to it to check the many, many spurious details
that are sent to me via email (generally from crazy family members who
ought to know better).

I always enjoy saying that I checked the validity of the latest claim on
snopes (and it's generally false, but sometimes I get a surprise to learn
something is true).

Comment: I love your work. I live on my Social Security so I cannot give
you a lot of money, but I wish I could. You are spot on about simplistic
solutions to complex problems. Whenever I am accosted by someone with a
simple answer to a big problem, I try to tell them, as kindly as possible,
that the true answer is never simple and seeking the truth does not make
one popular and telling the truth often makes others dislike the teller.
It's the old shoot the messenger deal. Keep up the good work and I will

that I'm sure are complete bull, and I always go straight to you to kick
it right back to the sender and all included to let them know not to

Comment: Once again you have beautifully and thoroughly shot down an
e-mail I received that I thought was a bunch of bunkum. Every time that
happens, I link the article on your site to my response to the e-mail and
remind people to use your site, giving them the search parameter I used
(usually something terribly simple, in this case "imported oil," which
brought it up as the first in the list). Some folks actually mend their
ways, but some are repeat offenders. I am patient. Irritated, but
patient, hoping they will learn to check first.

Thank you so much for this wonderful service. I learn a lot reading your
responses, whether the original e-mail was true or false. The family
motto is "Learn something new every day." Your site definitely is an aid
to that.

really gives me info I need on a 'hot topic,' with sufficient completeness
without being excessively 'chatty,' that article has the name of Barbara

Comment: Grateful Greetings!

I just finished a series of lessons with one of my English classes on
evaluating information. Urban myths were a featured topic. We had a class
"true/false" discussion on the myths on your "TROLL" page, and I was
nearly in tears by the time of the big reveal. It cemented the lesson
better than anything else could have - especially for those students who
already know and have come to trust your site.

how much I appreciate your site and the information you provide. I will
say that after several years of returning baloney mail with a link to the
truth on your website, that most of my family, friends, and co-workers no
longer send me garbage. I still have a few that have some portion of
their brain locked in to the thought that if it's in an email, then it has
to be true. Eventually, they too will check the source before forwarding
to 30 trillion people in their contact list.

because many times I read one of your articles and think, "That was great.

don't. I know I'm not the only slacker out here in the universe. There are

Comment: Please accept a HUGE bouquet from a Snopes fan in the UK!!

I get loads of well-meaning warnings, petitions about lost children etc,
cutesy stories and dire predictions from some of my friends and relations.
Thanks to you, I have now developed a sixth sense about these messages and
go straight to your website to check.

In about 80% of the cases I get a full answer and go back to them with the
link that sets them straight.

I keep asking them to check with Snopes.com before they promulgate these
stories, but with limited success. They LOVE this stuff!

But I'm a lot wiser, thanks to you!

I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your presence in
cyberspace. I come back to your website time and time again, and am never
disappointed.

BY FAR the most frequent reason I visit is in pure incredulity of the
latest thing my dear 71-year-old Mother has forwarded to me. Today it was
the "inspiring" story of a kid named Kyle (my nephew's name, a factor in
its inevitable forward) being prevented from suicide by a 'kind' fellow
student. It is a prime example of the two categories she simply cannot
help but forward - super-glurb and scare-the-public stories.

I am writing to let you know how much I absolutely LOVED your article
about this particular story; your response is well-referenced to the
original source, beautifully explained how and why it got to the glurb
level it did, and is exquisitely witty in it's delivery. Thanks so much
for being a welcome antidote to my Mother's well-meaning but ultimately
over-sugary enthusiasm to 'spread a little good' in the world. You are
doing an absolutely wonderful job of being the voice of reason about so
many things, and I am very grateful for the resource you have become.

Comment: The Snopes site is brilliant. I've been using it for years and
have come to rely on it as the defacto, go-to site to verify the validity
of the sometimes very useful info I get forwarded on email. I've noticed
the many subtle improvements and find the search function easy to use.

Comment: I LOVE Snopes, i.e., the work you do!!! I have a constant
barrage of bogus e-mails that come from a former boss, trying to promote
his own radical (and right wing religious) views. They are such bizarre
and fringe (distorted) opinions, perpetrated by, as I must imagine, some
frustrated control freak sitting at the computer, inventing stories!
I could simply reply to him with common sense retorts. However, that
never works as he writes me off as - oh any number of defenses are used -
ignorant liberal, not in touch, blah, blah, blah. However, when I send
him Snopes articles, he shuts up! Since I still need him as a job
reference, I am able to "tell him off" with a simple click!!
Thanks to all of you who do the reseach and obviously work so hard to set
the record straight!

You guys are awesome. So awesome, it amazes me. I live in the deep south
where propaganda and outright lies are repeated as truth. I do what I can
to turn back the tide of stupid where I can, but the forces of ignorance

Comment: My Mother and people of her generation forward emails on a
regular basis. Some contain medical advice 'certified by Snopes'. Of
course, 99% are crap. Thank you for being there. Who knows how many
lives have been saved by your resource for people like me who check with
