Comment: I've found a fascinating mass delusion that seems to have nothing
backing it up: an alternate ending to The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy is shown wearing the ruby slippers as she lay in bed in the real world, then cut to credits. Around the internet, dozens of people, seemingly independently, have reported the distinct memory of a closing shot of ruby slippers shining bright red against the sepia-toned world. |

Darn it!
Now I've been infected too! I close my eyes and I can see those glittering ruby slippers sparkle like a wink!!

They don't even show her feet at the end. She's lying down and then sitting up in bed with the covers over the lower half of her body and her family, the ranch hands, and Professor Marvel standing over her. Now, they may be getting it confused with the fact that earlier during the tornado and the witch appears, you do see a faint glimmer on her shoes indicating that they are the ruby slippers so the witch is the Wicked Witch of the East.

I have a book, The Making of the Wizard of Oz, that doesn't mention that at all. As comprehensive as the book is, it would have been mentioned had it been filmed.

Where are all the people on the internet who claim to remember it?

I've heard of an alternate ending as well. Only it has nothing to do with the ruby slippers. In this one Dorothy, the scarecrow and the lion make a bong out of the tin man. The implication being that the whole story was just a drug induced dream.
There is plenty to back up this ending in the movie itself. They fall asleep in a field of poppies. Falling snow wakes them up. Flying monkies. Funny sounding little paople. A horse that changes color. It all makes sense when one understands that the movie was all about drugs. Photo "What do mean stand up comedy is not a good reference?" Bob |

Probably mixing up the memory of closeups of the shoes in other parts of the movie.

Did you miss the scene where Dorothy smokes the Scarecrow in the Tin Man bong?

There there, Richard. There aren't any little people. There is no such place as Internet. We dream lots of silly things. But you're safe with us now.

Wouldn't the same intrepid pioneer who figured out that Dark Side of The Moon syncs with WoO have noticed ruby red slippers at the end?
BTW, I always wanted a flying monkey. I would have made do even if they came without the swoozy vests and hats. Ali |

[shudder] Flying monkeys. .. [/shudder]
I had mentioned my reaction to them to Mom, and then one day we were watching the movie, and the Munchkins came on, and she said, "Are these the things you were afraid of?" Yes, Mom. I was afraid of Munchkins. Not the grotesque flying monkeys doing the bidding of the wicked witch, but the little people dancing. That's what scared me.

My ex-MIL couldn't understand why I loved Wizard of Oz so much. She said that the entire movie made her anxious and it was just as bad as a horror movie to her.

Lainie:
The tornado scared the crap out of me. The monkeys seemed like a way to fetch my coke and comic books from the store for me. Best of all, without paying for them! Really, imagine them in little baseball jerseys with gloves on their heads--too cute! Ali |

Y'know how all the people at the end were characters in Oz? I kept waiting for a Shriner to show up, since the flying monkeys were wearing fez & vest deals.

I don't know. The guy who runs the superdickery.com website says that he's worked with monkeys in laboratory experiments, and that there is nothing more frightening to him than the idea of a monkey with super-powers....
