Mouse Kill mice with potato flakes

Comment: Just heard from numerous sources to use potato flakes to kill

Leave out a bowl of potato flakes, and a bowl of water. The mice eat the
flakes, drink the water.

The water will cause the flakes to expand and mice will get a very bloated
feeling making it difficult for them to breath. Either the expansion of
the flakes in their stomach causes them to suffocate or to have bursting
stomachs; and, they will die.

It sounds pretty suspect to me, mice just drink little bits of water - how
is that enough to really reconstitute the potato? I saw it on at least 10
or so different websites, with no debunking.

Everything else aside, potato flakes really don't "fluff up" all that much. The brand I used back when I was really broke recommends the following:

2 one-cup servings = 1/2 cup potato flakes + 3/4 cup water + 1/4 cup milk

While you could argue that the flakes double in size, you have to add twice their mass in liquids to get them to do it. Adding a little tiny bit of water to a lot of potato flakes won't cause all of them to increase in size (even by a little); all you'll get is a mostly unchanged bowl of dry flakes with a small ball of goo where your water landed.

Just as an aside, those taste really awful without the butter and milk.

Unless the potatoe flakes have a chemical reaction that generates a gas when they contact water, the volume of potatoe flakes with water is going to be pretty much the same as the volume of potatoe flakes plus the volume of water.

IOW, the mouse would only get that bloated feeling if he overate the flakes and then overdrank the water. IOOW, the same thing that would happen when overeating anything.
