Fright Eating before bed causes nightmares

Comment: Is it true that eating or drinking before you go to bed will
cause bad dreams?

We dream every night, whether we remember it or not; also, most dreams are bad dreams (I read all this somewhere and I don't recall where). I don't know if correlation has anything to do with the food.

Ever since I got married (which will be 11 years ago in October), it is a rare event when I don't eat right before bed. Before marriage, I always ate a good 3-4 hours before bedtime. I can't say as I had a significant increase in my number of nightmares. I have them, sure, but I had them before I got married, too. In my case, there doesn't even seem to be correlation, much less causation.

I've noticed something interesting.

If I sleep on my left side (sinister, hah!), I tend to have nightmares.
Also, I have acid reflux, and if I sleep on my left side, my stomach will gargle most of the night.

I wonder if they're related.

I've noticed that my dreams will be more vivid and disturb my sleep if I get too hot in my sleep. We have a heated matress pad on the bed, and it I don't turn my side* of it off when I get into bed, I will have bad dreams that wake me up all night.

*I really only need it so I'm not getting the ice cold bed.

If we don't remember most of them, how do we know most are bad? And what counts as bad?
