Default "Black or yellow or brown or normal"

Comment: Is this a real advertisement or a joke? A friend posted it on her
facebook page as an appalling example of clueless racism, but it's hard for
me to believe that anyone is really that clueless.

The text looks faked.

It took me a while to notice the "brown" kid is darker than the "black" kid.

Not sure that means anything, though.

I think Damian is assuming that the second kid from the left is the "black" kid and the third kid from the left is the "brown" kid.

I have no idea why he's assuming that.

ETA: Unless he's assuming the kids are arranged from R-L in the same order the words appear in the caption -- but the kid on the far left is clearly Asian, which I'm guessing it what the "caption" means by "yellow."

Some things I noticed: the advertisement is at an angle in the picture and the text follows this angle. What I mean is the spacing between the text and the picture in the middle seems to be constant throughout. I do not think the ad itself is centered on the wall though (look at the space between the tiles on the right and the right side of the picture). If it's hanging from the wall, it's hanging at the wrong angle.

But it IS possible someone could make an ad that stupid.

The kid second from left has negroid features, and the kid third in line is clearly of Indian extraction.

I was commenting on how "we" decribe people as black (or brown) when they quite clearly are not.

The third kid from the left resembles any number of African-American kids (and adults) I've known.

Whilst Melbourne doesn't have a large African/American* population, we do have a large Indian population and the kid (in that pose) looks Indian to me.

But I defer to your wider experience and withdraw the comment.

*I'm not sure how else to describe the mixed race, partial African type of person that generally has lighter coloured skin but still may be described as African.

Melbourne has a growing population of African refugees from Sudan and surrounding areas. There is no mistaking them.

FWIW, we have a pretty large Indian community here, too, and the workforce at my office includes a number of Indians.

The third from the left definitely doesn't look like anybody of Indian (either eastern or Native American) descent I've ever met. Plus, the hairstyle is very much an African-American cultural style.

Now, I should admit to have never seeing everybody from either India or all Native Americans, so my experience is limited.

"Normal" is just a setting on the dryer. Does the person that made this for 'cracked.com' think it is funny somehow?

Well, the contest was for counter-productive PSAs.

The second kid, from the left, looks like he could be hispanic. I've known hispanics who refer to themselves as brown. The third kid from the left is clearly african american. He doesn't look anything like and indians or native americans I've ever known.

Just to stir the pot, is the kid on the far right a ginger?

I'm not sure if it was the intent of whoever created the picture, but it's a pretty decent bit of satire on how white is still very much the default in westerm societies, IMO.
