I'm just reading Louis de Bernieres book "Notwithstanding" and the plot of the short story "Colonel Barkwell, Troodos and the Fish" is a version of the UL about the cat that died after eating fish that was served to dinner party guests resulting in the trip to hospital to have stomachs pumped.

In de Bernieres' version, the wife suspects the fish may be past its best and offers some to the cat. The cat eats it with relish and doesn't fall ill so the rest is cooked and served to guests. The rest follows the UL with the cat found dead, the guests rushing to hospital and a note of apology from the car driver arriving rather belatedly. It's quite nicely done as part of a series of short stories about village life and village eccentrics set in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

From the title, I thought this thread was about one of the lesser-known Narnia books....

I bought a Christmas turkey (free range, organic, etc) big enough for 4 of us - that really is for me and 3 moggies!
