Icon24 Alcohol can be absorbed through feet

Objective: To determine the validity of the Danish urban myth that it is possible to get drunk by submerging feet in alcohol.

Conclusion: Our results suggest that feet are impenetrable to the alcohol component of vodka. We therefore conclude that the Danish urban myth of being able to get drunk by submerging feet in alcoholic beverages is just that; a myth.

The secondary outcome was self assessment of intoxication related symptoms (self confidence, urge to speak, and number of spontaneous hugs), scored on a scale of 0 to 10.
No count of the number of "I love you man!" or drunk-dialing?

PS. Can you get drunk via inhaling evaporated alcohol?

According to this article, yes. http://www.slate.com/id/2106393/

It certainly makes sense, as alcohol will pass through any porous membrane, and since we exhale alcohol when we have more in our blood than in the ambient air, it clearly can pass through the lung's membranes. Of course, you asked 'drunk' rather than just absorption by inhalation. The problem is that for the blood to absorb the alcohol through the lungs and sinuses, the concentration in the inhalation has to be strong enough that the blood will take it up from the inhalation, and whatever is not absorbed will just be breathed away. And of course, you will be exhaling the alcohol out of your blood when you are not breathing from the alcohol inhaler, and your liver will be processing it as well. As discussed in the article, the AWOL inhaler takes 20 minutes to use up one shot of hard liquor: this is enough time to metabolize one third of a shot, which is close to as much as you would probably absorb (very rough WAG on my part), since a lot is probably lost to the air.

FYI - much more efficient uptake can be had by way of alcohol enemas ( http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/4731.html ). One of the most important functions of the large colon is to remove water from waste before it goes, and alcohol is similar enough chemically to alcohol that it is taken in through the colon lining very readily. People have killed themselves with experiments along these lines.

I think if you're trying to absorb alcohol through your feet, then you've probably had too much already.

Um... I think if you're drinking it off the floor then you're probably in worse shape than if you are trying sensibly to absorb it with your feet. Just saying. (We used to pour it our bath. Never seemed to do any good. It was just yet another of mrs ganz's Fun with Bogus Health Treatments. Smelled funny too.)

No, that's not until I appear to have had a sudden desire to absorb alcohol from the bar floor with my back.

Icon24 Scientists dip toes into an old alcohol myth

For a British medical journal's holiday issue, they determine that immersing the feet in vodka does not lead to intoxication. Other studies look at fondue digestion and the link between surgery and Ikea pencils.
