Do you think we could circulate a request to catch bin Laden and form a moderatere non-factional yet still representative Iraqi government while we're at it?

*sigh* I'm going to hell, aren't I...

Here's a stupid question, if the Taliban is holding this area because of their ability to grow heroin here, why couldn't we use aircraft to identify these crops and apply some kind of substance to kill the crops? Even if we don't want to use chemicals that might be akin to Agent Orange, simple salt will probably do an effiecint job.

Without the crops, there's no more incentive to for the taliban to hold the territory?

Short-term goals (getting the Taliban out of there) have to be weighed against long-term goals (creating stability, encouraging the Afghan people not to hate us).

soo... Do it at night and blame the taliban. Maybe spread rumors that allah is so pissed off at thier perversion of His religion that He has rendered their land unfertile.

In seriousness, the salt should have a limited effect and the land should be farmable in a few years. And if they keep the dusting limited to the heroin crops, the farmers who are actually growing foodstuff should be uneffected.

If you're a subsistence farmer, a few years is a long time to go without crops. Restricting the substance to the heroin is a good idea, but I don't know how workable it would be -- are the Taliban not smart enough to intermingle the poppies with food crops?

It's also possible that some of the revenue from the poppies is paying to feed the area residents.

I don't know why we don't just buy the farmers off their land. How much can it be worth? Or massive subsidies for every crop except poppies.

There are limits to what money can accomplish. You can pay or bribe a farmer not to grow crops, but it's still physically possible to grow crops on that land even if that farmer leaves. You can also pay or bribe a farmer not to support insurgents/Taliban/Al Queda/who-or-whatever, but he's still physically capable of supporting them anyways. Now he's just got your cash too.

Don't subsidies for other crops, though, make it effectively unprofitable to grow poppies on that land instead?

I suspect it's not quite that simple to control what does or does not get grown on land in an area that is largely lawless with a strong Taliban presence. Some measure of control is necessary to ensure that:

1) people do what you pay them to do
2) those subsidies don't end up going directly to the Taliban anyways
