Comment: There is a rumor that a container ship in the Pacific sank, and
one of the containers burst open with a load of rubber ducks. The NOAA then traced the floating path of these rubber ducks all the way around the North American continent to the Atlantic, revising their records of currents and flow patterns as a result. |

Sounds like the story from a few years back about a container of Lego pieces that was lost off a ship.

There have been a few such studies relating to where lost cargo washes up IIRC. I'm sure there was one relating to a lost cargo of training shoes.
