Icon97 Ethel Kennedy had ten C-sections

Comment: It's not a new rumor but over the years I've heard the rumor
several times that Ethel Kennedy, widow of slain US Senator Robert
Kennedy, had all her children (TEN) by c-section. I just don't see how
that was possible 60 years ago. Even now a woman is advised against
having more than two or three c-sections just because the area where the
uterus heals is very weak.

Milestones: Dec. 20, 1968

Born. To Ethel Kennedy, 40, widow of Senator Robert F. Kennedy: her eleventh child, fourth daughter; in Washington, D.C. After eight weeks in bed . since she suffered false labor pains in October, Ethel checked into Georgetown University Hospital a few days before reaching term, was delivered by caesarean section in a 40-minute operation. It was her fifth caesarean, and both mother and 8-lb. 4-oz. daughter were reported in "excellent" shape.

ETA: I see a lot of web posts that claim that she delivered all 11 children by C-section.

Totally irrelevant I suppose, but my sister had five c-sections between 1973 and 1980. It was discouraged for a woman to try for a VBAC at the time so all her births were scheduled, and she never went into labor except for the last one and ended up with an emergency c-section as a result. I'm assuming that in Kennedy's case, her last five births were all c-sections after the first six were vaginal delivery, and while her first child was born nearly 60 years ago she had them over a 17 year span.

I thought most doctors were still recommending that women who have had previous C-sections not try to give birth vaginally. That was the case when my brother was born two years ago. My stepmom had her first child delivered by C-section, and she told me that the doctor insisted she have another one.
