People who drink sugary soft drinks do not appear to compensate by reducing calories somewhere else in their diets, so they tend to pack on extra pounds, Yale University researchers report.

Well, duh.
Whenever I feel the urge to lose a few pounds for swimsuit season, I just cut from my diet all beverages besides water and black coffee. I don't have much to lose--my body fat percentage is somewhere in the 17-18% range--but I can drop five pounds in a month that way.

What about people who consume diet soft drinks?
Also, what's the fun of only drinking water and black coffee? Both drinks are yech. You gotta get your calories from somewhere. - Pseudo (moderation, folks) Croat

Whoo hoo! Water is my all time favorite drink. Just plain ole filtered water, I drink it all day. No calories, and it tastes great! And the ocassional black coffee now and then. Mmmm, coffee.

I assume they're all going to die of cancer. Seriously, though, I thought I read a study somewhere to the effect that diet soft drinks actually spur the appetite somehow and cause significantly more weight gain than would drinking water (or sparkling water, which I drink when I need something fizzy) but now I can't find it. Can someone less Google-impaired help me out? I think it might have even been discussed on the old board, which I still can't get to because I'm afraid to clear my cookies.

Count me as one who prefers to eat her calories rather than drink them. I also save money by sticking to water and black coffee!

The discovery of "good" black coffee has saved me oodles in money and weight. I drink two pots a day, which equates to about $10 a month for good Ethiopian or Costa Rican beans. That sure beats the $200 a month I used to pay on Diet Soda. Even if I drank the best of the best, the Konas and Blue Mountains, I'd still be saving money. I just can't see paying 200% more for coffee that only tastes about 20% better.
It's the caffeine I'm after, but it's the taste I love. |

I completely agree with you on water and coffee. Blech. Second worst drinks ever, below only tea.

Coffee disgusts me. The smell, the taste, ech.
I still drink diet soda to an extent, but not nearly as much as I used to. Now, at home, I drink water 90% of the time, fruit juice of some sort the other 10%. We use an Aquasana water filter, which does a fantastic job of removing all the crap* from our water. I drink about a gallon of water a day. The filter needs to be replaced every 6 months or so, and costs about $60. I tried the more commonly available filters, but they didn't do much to improve the taste. * figurative, but it wouldn't surprise me

I find that I drink water most of the time, when I drink fruit juice it is usually only grape and I water it down to half water half juice this way it isn't as much sugars and not as strong. I usually have one hot tea a day but like I said it is mostly water filtered, yes it does make a difference.

I do like my diet cokes (my subsitute for coffee, since I'm not so keen on the taste of coffee) but at home I mainly drink fruit juice, squash or water.
