Icon24 Beer attracts and kills snails

Comment: I was told if you place beer in a container near your flower beds
it would attract snails and kill them. I would like to know if this is
true.

Not that it means anything, but they used this method in an episode of King of the Hill when Peggy was running an organic garden at Bobby's school.

Yep, it's true. Every garden in my neighborhood has a gallon milk container in it, with a large hole cut high on one side, and a little beer in the bottom.

Seems the snails are attracted by the yeast in the beer. They slither in, drink the beer, get drunk, and drown.

A lot of websites on green gardening advise putting out a shallow dish or bowl, and recommend stale beer. Experience says it doesn't matter, as long as it's beer. The taller gallon jugs just make cleanup less disgusting.

My mother used to put beer in dixie cups trimmed to about a couple of inches high to attract and drown slugs that would get into her flower pots. I don't recall finding many snails in the cups (no pun intended), however.

Yeah. I'd heard this about slugs, but not snails.

I figured the recommendation for stale beer was because you wouldn't want to waste good beer on snails.

Of course.

Also, the carbonation in fresh beer tends to act as a deterrent to the very beasts being invited into the "pool." They don't like bubbles.

Aren't snails just slugs with a housing allowance.

As stated before work for slugs as well.

Micro brew works better than those cheap rice filled beers. Someone did a study on it around here several years ago. I do not remember what was the best beer to use.

Where I live using beer may mean you find a drunk raccoon instead of dead slugs.
