Goldfish Swallowed by a grouper

Comment: A fishing guide in sarasota florida said that back in the 70's a
diver was sucked into the mouth of a huge goliath grouper but was able to
free himself by swimming out the gills. Goliath groupers ca be a 1000 lbs.
Is there are report of this?

I've heard that rumor too, but I have trouble believing it. Groupers swallow their food whole: something the size of an adult human just doesn't seem like something they'd target. Quite honestly, I don't think even a goliath grouper of that size has a mouth that's large enough to engulf a person- even large sharks like Great Whites aren't capable of such a feat, and great whites grow to nearly 5000 lbs.

More or less likely than being savaged by a turbot?

They're big, but not that big.

Wikipedia reports that they reach sizes of up to 800 lbs, but are considered mature at half that.

I was watching a show on Animal Planet many years ago when a grouper took Manny Puig's arm and took off swimming, it took a couple of minutes for him to free himself but I don't think they're large enough to swallow an adult.

Forgive me, as I don't know the anatomy of fish, but would escaping out the gills even be possible if one were swallowed whole?

Not really. First of all, the gill slits are angled towards the mouth, not the throat, and while they are open all the way through, they're not very big. It doesn't do a fish much good if a potential meal can swim straight out the gills, after all.

When I first read this thought it said it took his arm OFF! Now I am wondering...did it just want to show him something ...I mean what was it planning to do with him.

Swallowed by a groupie is a lot funnier.

I've heard anecdotal accounts of big groupers trying to swallow people, but unsuccessfully...

Default Grouper trying to swallow diver...

I remember back in the late 60's or early 70's reading a local (Corpus Christi) newspaper account of a scuba diver around one of those oil rig or ship habitats. There was a very large grouper (several hundred pounds) that tried to suck the diver in but got caught up on the tanks. Big mouth but not quite big enough, I guess. I am hazy on the specifics of how he got loose - whether the grouper spit him out or if the diver managed to free himself - but have always remembered it as an interesting story. Whether it is the germ of the 'legend', I have no idea, but someone could probably find it in newspaper archives if they wanted to search it out.
