Why not?

If you have been involved in something yourself, you're far more likely to tune in to or remember news broadcasts about it, even if not about the bit you were involved in.

It doesn't actually evidence that the event happened, but it lends credibility to a more stringent observation and more lasting memory than perhaps the average Joe.

Actually, if you've been involved in something yourself (as a long-term participant), you're less likely to watch and remember news broadcasts about it, because you already know about the subject from first-hand experience, and your personal memories are far more vivid than television depictions.

Comment: You do a diservice to every parent and their children by labeling
as "false" tales of abductions from public places such as malls and
amusement parks.

I have been to countless seminars on this very problem, and it IS a
problem. Parents are told to look not for the clothes that the child was
wearing, but look for the face and shoes.

This is a very real problem, and for you to sweep it under the rug like
this is more than irresponsible, it is criminal.

Please reconsider your "false" rating, and save a child's life.

I understand that focussing on the face (which is unique) and the shoes (which are not as easily changed after abducting a child, unless you know it's shoe size beforehand) makes it less easy for an abductor to disguise the child by swapping the bright red sweater against a dark blue one nobody will be looking for.

What I don't understand is that snopes labeling one particular story about a child abducted in one particular mall as "false" is somehow "criminally sweeping the problem of child abduction under the rug"...
