I find it a bit amusing that the left/right stance on the gun control issue is reversed here. Here, the left are more pro-gun, as a way to establish a more balanced capacity for violence between the citizens and the state, while the right want a stronger state and is opposed to private ownership of guns (unless you are rich).

Same here. You are not even allowed a gun if you are under a direct threat, they are only for hunting and sports target shooting.

Personally, I feel that the main reason to own a gun is not to defend yourself, you just up the ante if you bring guns into that game. The main reason is that you can protect your country from becoming a dictatorship. A well armed population will discourage would be dictators from trying, and could depose them if they do try. By breaking the government monopoly on violence, you put the people back in control.

And the backup plan was attending a tea party rally. Gosh, he just did everything possible to try to mend their relationship, short of, you know, taking down the sign or suggesting doing anything together that the other person wouldn't hate.

I agree that this story doesn't ring true even without the bad photoshop. It just reads like fantasy glurge from a jagoff. And really, how hard would it be to make a real sign, even if the story was fake? Perhaps too timid to risk anyone seeing it even long enough to photograph it, or maybe their mom's trailer isn't very photogenic.

Yes, most of the left-wing liberals up here support sensible gun control, but most of us also own guns. It's only an uncommon shared trait up here because there's relatively few of us liberals to start with.

Reminds me of Atticus Finch. Or my own family.

It sounds to me like our political spectrums are aligned differently. What you describe as your left are more like our far left or radical left, and your right sounds like our left. I be curious to know if you have anything as far right as our right.

ETA: I'm not sure if far left/radical left was the right term. I was thinking more the new world order Alex Jones types. At that point the far far left pretty much comes full circle and meets the far right so there's some overlap. See the tea party movement for instance. Though you are correct that opposition to gun control is typically a right wing thing, but not for the extreme reasons you mention.

Well, the entire spectrum in Sweden is left of the entire spectrum in USA. Our liberals are considered right wing, and our conservatives are still less conservative than US democrats.

Sure, we have a few right wing neo nazi nuts, but they are not many enough to be of any importance in the political game.

I've met more then a few people of the liberal slant that see responsible firearm use in a positive light.
I think it's because many such liberals are very pro-Constitution and the right to bear arms is part of the Second Amendment.
