No Woman Victim of Dating Scam

Monica Flick considers herself to be pretty savvy but when it came to matters of the heart she didn't listen to her head. Now she's warning others about the dating disaster she fell prey to.

Frying Pan

Sounds like yet another 419 variant to me.

Why, why, why!

Anyone who has ever seen an episode of ANY of hte judge shows knows that you NEVER, EVER get a cell phone for someone else in your name.

My cell phone is set up in my SOs name, which is set up with his step mom's name. He has had the account since he was 16 and he is now 25. Im in a long term relationship and have no desire to run and niether does he. In our case it was the best way to work out the phone problem.

There are exceptions to every rule, were one of them.

I dunno - it's pretty common under some circumstances. I get a huge deal on cell phone plans through a corporate plan, and they actively promote getting plans for relatives. My mom has a cell phone plan that's officially in my name. I shopped the plan around and was told over and over by competing companies that they couldn't match it.

D'oh! Cell phones

It's one thing to get a cell phone account for a family member or someone you've known for a long time. My husband and I added my mom to our account so she could have a phone. But why, why, WHY would you open a new account for someone you haven't even MET? Of course Cingular is holding her responsible for the bill. She did something really stupid, and now she has to pay for it.

That's really the problem, isn't it? When people are convinced they can't be fooled, they trust their intuition too much.

[hijack] Is there a recent spate of Nigerian scammers using British names and addresses lately? This is probably the 3rd 419 scam that I heard about that involves a British address/person.

Also, I have a second house that I rent out. Few months ago I had put a listing on craigslist, and British guy emailed me. His english was weird, and he wouldn't fill the application forms, but he was more than eager to send money to us. My spidey-senses were tingling so I stopped corresponding with him. Makes me wonder if I almost ran into a 419 scammer

Every person I've ever known who got a phone for someone else got burned. Maybe it's because they got phones for their lovers that they knew less than 6 months. Silly people.

Does this strick anyone as about the biggest "well, duh!" statement you ever heard? Seriously, if someone I'd never met started asking me for money or a cell phone (of all things!), of course I'd run! And I have a few very good friends I have met on the internet, and I do trust them, but have some common sense, for crying out loud.

I don't know about getting a cell phone for someone, but I certainly wouldn't re-finance my house and go into $55,000 worth of debt for someone I'd never even met. Savvy? Hmmm.

Invest in a cam and a microphone for about $30 and you can see and hear your "sweetie" for free ever after with Netmeeting

This woman sounds completely brainless. I have no sympathy for her and hope that she actually pays her debts rather than declare bankruptcy. If I were one of her creditors, I wouldn't cut her any slack either.

Holy stupid! I can't believe people out there are that desparate that they'd fall for this in the name of love...
