Default Michelle Obama's shoes

Comment: I bet Queen Elizabeth never spent this much on one of her hats!

Barack Obama enjoys living like a king, so why shouldn't Michelle Obama
live like a queen? The First Lady was photographed last night in Hawaii
wearing $635 per pair designer shoes by Maison Martin Margiela.

A woman lucky enough to have a job in this economy and working for the
federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour would have to work 88 hours
(without taxes taken out) to make enough to pay for Michelle Obama's
shoes.

The Obama's are staying at an $8.9 million estate for an estimated $4000
per night. To cover the Obama's ten night stay, the minimum wage worker
would have to work two-and-a-half years (before taxes) to come up with
the $40,000 Obama is reportedly laying out. Obama has lectured Americans
about how they can not expect to live their lives as indulgently as they
have in the past.. He has lectured businesses about their travel and pay.
Yet Obama and his wife live like kings and queens. The news media has
yet to call him out on his extravagance when there is 10% unemployment
with no sign of the employment picture improving this coming year.

The way they spend OUR MONEY is an insult to every hard working
citizen of this country. GREED is their CREED !

Please send this to everyone, including Politicians, to see if any of them
has the guts to start an investigation into the extravagance they show
daily.

Do it before this gets pulled off the internet.

She does appear to own those shoes and they do appear to be from the designer named:

The diatribe is poorly written, but I think that the gist may be that the taxpayers are paying for the Obama's stay at some 8.9 MM $$$ estate !!! (although I am not sure that we are) . And the fact that Michelle spent money on shoes like Amy Winehouse did, or something. OMG! A well educated woman who has made decent money on her own spent money on her shoes so that she didn't look like a slob getting off the plane in shorts that were too short!!!

Whomever wrote that hasn't spent much time browsing millinery shops. Couture hats such as Queen Elizabeth wears can easily start at US$650 and can be found for up to twice that. Couture fascinators can be up to US$700.

Queen Elizabeth's hats are around $400 a pop and heaven only know how many she owns. So that arguement fails. Also, I would hope we would want our First Lady to look a bit more polished than the average worker. And then there's the fact that while taxes pay their salaries, taxes do not directly buy any of the clothes for politicians or their spouses. (Aka, what snopes said.)

I don't want to turn this into a 'But President X' thread, but don't presidents and their spouses typically dress fairly fashionably and tend to stay in expensive hotels while on vacation?

I mean, did Carter or Clinton or either of the Bushes do their shopping at Wal-Mart and stay at a Motel 6 while on vacation?

Obviously none of them were, you know, *black*, so they could stay where they wanted.

However, similar screeds were about during the other administrations, too.

Personally, I enjoy the idea that the Obamas have control over the entire Internet. If he had as control as these nuts believed, the health care bill would have been finished months ago.

As others have said, the shoes are a non-issue. They can choose to spend their money however they choose.

It does appear they stayed at an $8.9 million estate in Hawaii for a ten day vacation over last Christmas. No mention of how much they paid to rent it.

Assuming that's on their private dollar, I again have no issue with it. If the rent on their vacation home were paid for by the government directlyin some way, then yes, that would be an issue. But there's no indication that is the case.

I know, right? For a tyrant, he sure is a lame one.

Not George W. Bush, because he conveniently owned a 1,600-acre ranch in Texas which provided suitable space for setting up security and entertaining foreign dignitaries while he was on vacation. The Obamas, of course, own no comparable property in Hawaii.

I don't spend a lot of time following American politicians and their spouses, but my impression is that, to a great extent, First Ladies have followed the "Don't wear out in public anything you've already been photographed wearing" rule made popular by royal ladies and celebrities.

Mrs Obama just can't win. She dresses fashionably and she's torn apart for being frivolous, wasteful, and unsympathetic. She dresses casually and she's an undignified embarrassment who doesn't belong anywhere near the White House.

I really like her dress. I don't really care how much she paid for any of her clothes but if she did pay $635 for those shoes I think she over paid.

Just sayin

I think those shoes are ugly, too, Wild Redhead.

What's with the weird color difference around the shoes in the full-length shot?

Also, isn't is possible that the First Lady would get all kind of schwag from designers for free?

And I've found that $25 shoes aren't as comfortable to wear for long periods (especially heels) and don't last as long. $635 is way more than I'd spend on a pair, myself, but the shoes that I've personally spent more money on are still going strong two or three years later.

I am not actually sure about this, but probably not.

Federal employees have a very strict code of ethics they must follow as it involves receiving gifts.

I don't know if the First Lady falls under those provisions, but I wouldn't be surprised if she did (and if not, she really should).
