Comment: Regarding your article on letters to Santa in Canada, would you mind taking out the "Frozen North" comment? Maybe insert "our neighbours to the North" or maybe even "Canadian"? It's assumed by many Americans that we live in ice & snow all year round but the basic truth is that we have four distinctive seasons (gosh, the temperatures actually go up in the 90's in July!!). There are U.S. states that are much farther north than where I live; the most southern point in Canada has the same latitude as Northern California.

Today is January 1, 2007 and it's 50F outside. We haven't seen a flake of snow so far this winter.

I love your site - I really do. I'm just weary of all the stereotypes when it comes to Canada.

To be fair, I don't believe it's common knowledge for everyone where Barbara is originally from. But this:

She seems to forget that Canada is a very big place. Today is January 1, 2007 and it was -10C this morning and there's more than a foot of snow on the ground. In the last two months I've lived through a week of colder than -25C and I will probably see -30C again before Easter. Last Tuesday in southern BC I woke up to 5 inches of snow that wasn't there the night before.

I don't think this is true. Some parts of Canada only have one season -- I've been watching Corner Gas, and Saskatchewan apparently has gorgeous, summer-like weather all year around.

You mustn't have seen the Christmas episode yet. It's gorgeous and summer-like most of the year, but Dog River gets snow for Christmas.

The third season is out on DVD, and yes, there is a Christmas episode, so Christmas does indeed come to Dog River. Maybe they only celebrate once every three years or something.

Ah yes. Ariadne is right, they've only had one Christmas so far. But it was a white Christmas.

We've missed most of season three. I really need to pick up the DVD.

Wow, I had no idea Corner Gas was available south of the border. For those who are watching are you picking it up via satellite from a Canadian channel or is it being shown on a US channel?

...and I've yet to see winter in Dog River myself...

Must be satellite or DVD. It was only last month or so that Corner Gas was picked up by a US station for airing.

We had to order the DVD from Amazon.ca. We don't get cable or satellite, so I don't know if it is shown on US TV. We were introduced to it via my husband's relatives, many of whom live in Canada. His parents brought back the first and second seasons from Canada when they came out. We haven't made it through the whole third season yet, but it is great so far.

Okay, according to Jenn it is available for viewing on US television.
