Just because it’s out there, it doesn’t mean the story is true

‘Why is this not reported in the news????!!!” screamed the headline of an e-mail.

What followed in the text appeared to be an Associated Press story detailing how the U.S. Supreme Court had agreed to hear arguments concerning Barack Obama’s legal eligibility to serve as president.

There is one problem: The story is a hoax. The Supreme Court is not hearing any such case and the AP wrote no such article.

A number of Web sites are dedicated to debunking such hoaxes. The two I’ve found most reliable are snopes.com and FactCheck.org.
