Blow Your Top Stand up for spring

It isn’t spring that makes scientists crazy. It’s an urban legend that’s often passed around as fact: The only time of the year when an egg can balance on its end is when the sun crosses directly over the Earth’s equator, the moment known as the vernal equinox, or start of spring.

Glasses Egg Balancing

This is absolutely and positively true. Considering the amount of time that the sun is directly above the equator is (depending on the accuracy of your measurement device) on the order of a few milliseconds, the egg actually is able to stand on end for this period. Once the sun passes the equator, of course, the egg will fall over.

The same will happen at the autumnal equinox, of course.

The difficulty is in timing the balancing act to coincide with the equinoxes.
