Comment: I heard a rumor that the original owner of H.E.B supermarkets was
named Harry Butt, but was embarrassed by that name and changed it. I've read one history and I think it said his name was Howard. Can you verify this rumor for me. |

Howard E. Butt was the son who expanded the Butt empire. The first store was opened by his father, Charles C. and was called C.C. Butt Grocery. Occasionally, we speak of the store as "the HeButt"

I find the story of their competitors more interesting.
Like how Benjamin Ivan Goldstein and Ahmed Sayyid al-Safi overcame the prejudices of their socities to form a supermarket. For some reason, they opted not to go with the acronym of their names.

Charles C. begat Howard who begat Charles. Who is a charming old man, by the way.
Great company - they treat their customers and employees right. And gay-friendly to boot, which makes me happier to spend money there. In fact, I was there today. We had friends from up north come to visit and took them to HEB (you know, we're such entertainers). They read it as "heeb" and thought it was an ethnic slur. |

Well, when I went off to College in Austin, the credit card charges for H.E.B. read "Howard E. Butt". Of course, my credit card bill went to my parent's house... It took them months to finally ask me who this guy was that I was paying each and every weekend.

When I was a Griffling, I would go to the summer camp that the Butt foundation setup. It was always great fun.
Today, the Griffette and I do most of ourt grocery shopping at an HEB Central Market (which is a traditional grocery store as opposed to a supermarket. They have awesome produce, fresh cut meat and seafood, a ginormous wine and beer selection, and the employees are very knowledgeable and friendly. Plus they have live music on the patio every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening). All of that to say, yes, the Butt family is real. |

The HEB store. I miss it so much.
When my older daughters were little they thought we were spelling the word store when we said H.E.B. (Like we would spell ice cream or candy) I would say "I have to go to H.E.B." and they would say I want to go to the store, too. |
