I keep receiving marketing emails from CitiBank (I have one of their credit cards) with subjects like "Offer Ends 12/20/09. A New Balance Transfer Offer for You" or "Reminder: Your Balance Transfer Offer Expires 10/15/09" etc.
I was getting a little tired of these emails, so I went to change my email preferences on their site. Odd, I thought, I already have all the boxes regarding "special offers" unchecked. All I have selected is "I am only interested in receiving email containing account information about my credit card." So why am I still receiving marketing emails from them? Apparently, their definition of "account information" now includes "balance transfer eligibility." Grrrr. Clearly they use this rather loose definition of account information in order to get away with sending what are clearly marketing emails when you think you've chosen not to receive marketing emails. The annoying thing is that there is no way to get emails regarding some of the other things in this caregory without also giving them permission to send me these damn balance transfer offers. It's all or nothing.

Are you sure that this isn't a phishing scam by some third party?

The emails are clearly from Citi. Among other things, they contain my name and the last four digits of my card number.

Citi's been attempting to telemarket me 4 times per day for months, even though I have requested no telephone contact, so they're really bad about honoring customer's requests.

Pfft. They did the opposite with me. Right before my student loans went into repayment, they were apparently trying to get ahold of me to make sure I was going to pay, knew what I had to do, whatever. They called my grandmother- who is listed as a contact on my Federal Loans- and claimed they were unable to get ahold of me. They had my correct phone number, and I had not a single missed call or message from them.
