Default Installed Win7, but it's on the D drive

I got my copy of Win7 Pro today ($30, student deal), and decided to install it first on my laptop- more expendable if there is a problem.

It had been dual-booting XP Home and 7 Ultimate RC, so I plopped in the disk and installed. Problem is, it auto-installed over Win7, which was my D drive. Now the full OS is on my D drive instead of C.

Is this a problem, aside from flying in the face of convention? Any way to fix it?

(Warning: no help whatsoever!)

Well I'm peed off. It's £30 over here - rip off Britain strikes again! Hmph.

Shouldn't be any problem. Sometimes in business settings, they don't even have a C drive, as this tends to eff up a few viruses, but proper software handles it nicely. I've even had a Windows on E once, by mistake, and it worked nicely.

I'm confused. You're saying that is a rip off? Isn't that like $50? The retail price of Windows 7 Pro here is $200.

ETA: Never mind, I realize now that your student price is £30, not your retail price.

I played with it a bit- installed a second copy on a partition, named it C, deleted the other- and now it's all well.

Oddly, 7 seems to have made my poor old laptop's audio card better. Same driver as it was, but I can now crank it enough to hear three rooms away. Before, I could barely hear it sitting in my lap.

I have been thinking about upgrading my laptop to Windows 7. I'm waiting for money and reviews before running out and buying it.

As for drives and assigning letters. Window XP and Vista you were able to under "Control Panel" > "Administrative Tools" then select "Storage" > "Disk Management" then reassign drive letters. Can not remember if this could be done with boot able drives, but I seem recall doing it at least once.

As long as you can supply a valid email with a .edu address, I believe so. It's at 741. Click "Buy", then plug in your address. They check it for validity, email you back, and it's simply a matter of going through the "Domain" link for Pro, or the regular link for Home Premium.

How do you get the install? Is it a download that you can burn to a DVD/CD? I'm kind of interested, but I've got XP so I need to do a clean install... and if it's a download, I'll have to do that from work, since it'll no doubt flood my measly 5gb/month plan.

Download, let it unpack the download, burn the resultant .iso to a DVD. Easy.

Since it appears some downloads are a bit trickier to make into .iso, here's the method I found. I didn't post it before as it seemed as if mine was an outlier.

Nope. Swap, boot, and OS drives can't be changed. The OS is expecting those bits to be in the same places every time. You can change one OS's drive letter from the other, but that only affects how to looks from that OS. So if you changed the Vista OS partition letter to Q: from XP, it'd be C: in Vista but Q: in XP.

On my dual boot Vista grabbed C: during install, which annoyed me because now my C drive is dependent on what OS I'm in.
