Default I've had a hankering for some scary books

I've been trying to find some ghost fiction books. Not "true" ghost stories, but a fiction novel with a plot that centers around ghost hauntings. I'd even settle for vampires. Murder and gore to a minimum please. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

How about short stories? Tales of The Callamo Mountains, by Larry Blamire

I've said a lot about the Sookie Stackhouse series, but I also just finished Jeaniene Frost's Cat and Bones series, which I quite liked. No ghosts, but several ghouls. And then I plowed through JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. Quite heavy handed, but if you can get past the names of the leading men (Wrath, Rhage, Zsadist, Butch, Vishous, Phury and Rehvenge with whom I am in love), they're an entertaining read and ghosts are part of the universe. (One has a leading role.)

Who doesn't love vampire Jay-Z fans?

I have the Sookie Stackhouse novels on request at the library. Unfortunately, it seems the whole state of Mass does too

I checked out the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but I can't say I was a fan.

Tootsie, I will definitely check that book out, thanks!

Susan Hill's The Woman in Black and The Man in the Portrait (I think that's the name). Creepy, little to no gore. The only problem with both books is that they are quick reads.

Oh, and The House Next Door by Anne River Siddons.

Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box should fit the bill. I liked it a lot. It read like a throwback to Stephen King's earlier books. Hill probably picked up his writing style through literary osmosis since he's King's son. Hill also has an anthology, 20th Century Ghosts. It's on my voluminous to-read pile.

Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong and MaryJanice Davidson all right really good horror books. MaryJanice's books are more funny than horror, though.

I thought wrong: it's The Man in the Picture.

I found Sarah Waters' The Little Stranger to be a good ghost story, with some mystery too.

I cannot recommend The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson enough. I love that book.

It's a young adult book but I really like Jeremy Visick by David Wisemen. It's a good ghost story and no gore or anything.
