I have a normal (Non-HD) widescreen TV, and so far neither the money nor the desire to upgrade to HDTV soon. However, I noticed that more and more movies are coming out on Blu-Ray (as example, at my local Walmart I've seen BSG Seasin 4.5 only on Blu-Ray) and I heard Blu-Ray discs are rather scratch-resistant.
Now can I connect a Blu-Ray player to my SDTV? I know I wont get miraculously High Definition out of it, but it would be a a step towards an eventual upgrade to HD.

Well, I would do it the other way around. Get the TV first, they will not get much cheaper (the prices will go down a bit more, but not drop drastically). The Blu-Ray player, however, will get much cheaper soon, reaching price levels of the ordinary DVD players.

Yes you can.
The players stlll have the composite (red/white/yellow) RCA style connections.

Yes, you should be able to. Just make sure that it has outputs that are compatible with your TV.

I'll chime in and say one thing
I've had my bluray player hooked up to my SDTV, (27" Sony Wega circa 2000) for the past year, and my bluray collection is steadily growing. I still only buy movies I consider bluray worthy, (a completely biased opinion of course )one thing I've noticed on my TV, comparing regular DVD and bluray through the same connections, the blurays do look sharper to me. I'm attributing that to the reduced compression, nothing magical about it, kind of like the jump from vhs to dvd, the quality of dvd is lightyears ahead of vhs, and although it's not lightyears ahead the difference is there. course I'm getting my 46" HDTV next spring, and am excited as all heck for it :P |

I will add that you can watch DVDs on most if not all Blu Ray players, and they willl upconvert your DVD to 1080p resolution. So your existing collection is not obsolete! (you may have already known that).
I will also add that a DVD upconverted and played in a Blu Ray player on a 55" LCD looks freaking awesome. Not as awesome as a Blu Ray disc, but still awesome. ETA: we have had our Blu Ray player for about a month and our BD colletion stands at 2--Hannah Montana and Pirates of the Carribbean. However, our player came with Netflix Streaming, and we have streamed a ton of stuff.
