Sorry, Chloe.

I think AQB, Max's DHB was a little confused. The club has been in exsistence for quite some time. We just don't advertise it so as to keep the riff-raff out.

It annoys me that my mom keeps commenting about my clothing "That looks nice - very slimming."

A) It seems to me like she's saying "I mean, the rest of your clothes make you look totally fat, but that outfit creates the optical illusion that you aren't", even though I know she doesn't mean that.

B) No, actually I look slimmer because I'm losing weight. The shirt she made that comment about today actually hasn't been worn since I bought it because it's ribbed over the abdomen and before I lost weight the ribbing actually made me look lumpier than I was.

This directed mostly to people with widescreen TVs in public settings and users on video sites like Youtube. Learn what the NFBSK aspect ratios are and start using them correctly. How the hell can you not tell that your picture is not supposed to look like that?

People who use the font Comic Sans in any public piece of writing. I suppose these people find it somehow funny or cute or cheerful - I find it simply annoying.

Why isn't there a Comic Avec? (Avec Serif, one imagines; I giggle at the thought of that.)

There is at least one
.

Googling for "comic fonts" finds a variety of fonts in comic-book style, some with varying degrees of "serif-ness," for want of a better word.

People would be honestly shocked at the amount of vitriol certain fons (Comic Sans, Papyrus, and Ariel mostly) invoke in certain computer circles.

Drives me crazy, too. I love Comic Sans. I realize it's not appropriate for all situations. I wouldn't want to read an e-book in it, and I wouldn't use it on a job application. But for things like webcomics, flyers, and other light-hearted things, it's one of my favorites. The hatred for it is just so random to me. It's just a font.

It was made by Microsoft, which makes it evil. (This seems to be the main problem with Arial as well.)

It is often used by web comics as a shortcut instead of handwriting in speech bubbles, which somehow makes it evil.

For someone attempting a serious response:
http://www.latrobe.edu.au/news/artic...ban-comic-sans

Long story short the basic criticism is that it was never designed to be a general use font. It was originally designed for speech bubbles for the ill fated Microsoft Bob program. It's also the standard font for Sims speech bubbles. Essentially it was designed to be used for cartoonish talking effects.

I once heard it describes as "Imagine everything you read in Comic Sans is being read to you in a Donald Duck voice."

But this all only makes sense when you remember that there is an oddly large percentage of graphics designers that take topography very seriously.

And jumping off from the xkcd comid Joe posted, I would think Papyrus or Comic Sans would be an appropriate font for something like a birthday card. As you say, you wouldn't want to use it for your resume or anything trying to convey a "serious" tone, but that doesn't mean no one should ever use them for anything.

Well I will agree in the broad strokes that typefaces do have a general "tone" about them and seeing, say a warning sign or obituary in Comic Sans would be a bit weird.

It can just be taken a bit too seriously is all.

I think Comic Sans (and to a lesser extent Papyrus and Arial) has just become symbolic of poor typography design. I can imagine it is hard to be a graphics designer looking at the average MySpace page and not cry.

I, too was having trouble understanding this. I love Comic Sans. However...

I just read an 18 page grant application, all in Comic Sans. Submitted by a school district. Now, I will give it to them that this funding application is for early childhood development, but...it kinda doesn't look very professional.

I thought the main problem with Arial was "It's just a knock-off of Helvetica, which was the greatest font ever."

ETA: Now I've just cracked myself up picturing Kanye West saying that.

Which is to a tiny degree probably true. The similarities are striking and I'm sure Microsoft's wish to avoid the licensing fees for Helvetica were not a minor consideration.

But at the end of the day it's just a font. I watched the Helvetica documentary (and to be fair typography is a much more interesting subject then you'd guess) and I can't tell the difference between the two without going out of my way to compare them.
