Comment: My little sister says that the scoring in tennis (love, 15, 30,
40, deuce, game) was created with the intention of making it more difficult for the uneducated to learn the game, thus discouraging them from playing. Is that true? |

I've heard the clock analogy before too. I'd just assumed that 45 was changed to 40 so that it was two syllables like 15 and 30 for clarity of hearing the umpire.
I've also been told that "love" is a corruption of the French L'oef (the egg) since a zero resembles an egg shape. My memory may be sketchy, but haven't some minor tournaments experimented in the past with using a "1 [point]-2-3-Game" system? Last edited by Eddylizard; 20 October 2009 at 07:04 AM. |

I have heard this before, as well. There is an echo of this in cricket with a score of '0' being a 'duck' which is short for 'duck's egg'.
