Default Problem with video card

Recently I've had a problem where, when watching movies on the PC or playing a game with pretty decent graphics, I get a series of vertical red and green dots on the screen. Not enough so that I can't see what I'm watching, more of an annoyance than anything. I'm running an ATI Radeon HD 2900 Pro. Not the best card in the world, I know, but it's served my needs until now. I figured it was either a driver issue or the card was over-heating, so I re-installed the latest drivers and took an air-duster to the on-board fan on the graphics card and CPU. They were moderately dusty, and the machine runs a bit quieter now but the same problem persists. My desktop and all other applications look as they always have, it's just when I'm playing games or video that I get the problem. I've checked all the power supply connections etc. Anyone got any suggestions regarding what I could try next? I've tried to take a screenshot of what I'm seeing but in the screenshot it comes out perfect!

ETA: Sometimes the dots aren't red and green, but white. Not sure if that's pertinent info.

Are you using an LCD monitor?
It might be the monitor going bad.
I just swapped out a bad one with a similar problem.

Can you borrow another monitor to check for the problem?

Thanks for the reply, KirkMcD. I should have mentioned in my original post that I have actually already switched monitors and ruled that out as a possible cause. It was also suggested to me that I disconnect my CD-ROM drive in case it was sucking up some juice that should be going to the vid card and I did that also but the problem persisted.

if it is only with video or games, it sounds like the GPU is going.
Both video and games use a hardware accelerator to show the image. Your desktop does not.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards that theory as well. Looks like I'll have to invest in a new one before Crysis 2 comes out.

Hahaha.. You would probably have to buy a new one AFTER it comes out as well
