Default How can I promote my Fan-Fic?

I've written a story based on one of the actors in the tv show Supernatural. A few of my friends have said it's really good, and I would like more people/fans to read it.

I'm concerned about someone stealing it and claiming it as their own after my hard work. I've only edited & posted 3 of the 6 parts that I've written. I plan to write more once they're all up as I'm still deciding on the direction it will take.

Are there any good websites or blogs I can safely post on without people being able to copy/paste it? Thanks!

Fanfiction.net is the largest fanfiction site that I know of. You could also scope out some LiveJournal communities to post to. I'm sure Supernatural has many communities there. Once you get your name associated with this fic, it's harder for people to plagiarize it without someone calling the plagiarizer on it. However, I think if you post text of any kind on the Internet, copy and pasting can occur.

Plagiarism exists in fanfiction and it sucks. But on a list of things to be concerned about when posting fic, for me, it's pretty low. Personally, I just like the feedback I get for what I've worked on and if someone is enough of a jackass to steal it and any compliments it might get, it's their karma.

From time to time, if you're really worried, you should google a sentence of your fic to see if anyone else is posting it under another name.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about plagiarism in fanfic. Honestly, what are you worried about? It's not like you're likely to get an monetary gain from a fanfic, so the only thing someone could stand to gain from plagiarizing is to get a few "oh hey, this is great!" comments. Which would be directed at you, anyway, since it's your fanfic.

As far as I can tell, a great deal of the Supernatural fandom is on Livejournal, though there may also be some external fan sites and forums that are popular. Careful, though, Supernatural fandom (especially Jared/Jensen fangirls) is absolutely insane!

If it's specifically about the actors, it's RPF rather than fanfic. Whoooole different ball of wax, and a lot of archives (including fanfiction.net) won't touch it. Livejournal's probably gonna be your best bet for diversity of exposure, and they'll know if there are any archive sites in particular that would be a good fit for your work.

Sort of related, has anyone ever written fan-fics about snopes? I have a very detailed and extensive one in progress, and I've been curious about where to post it to.

When I was in my teens, I used to get emails from a couple of girls who made "stories" about the individual members of Nsync. It was a basic boy meets girl story, although mine isn't as much as oh em jee it's Justin! squeeeee!

I had always thought they were called fan-fic. But I see how a band/group is different writing from actor/character.

Beejtronic oh yes, I know (see Nsync mentioned above, I was going to [i]marry[i] Justin dammit!. I want to avoid getting wrapped up in Wincest entirely

There used to be a code for AOL web pages that didn't allow right clicking or copying...if it was an html code, could those be used on the sites mentioned?

I don't quite understand why you want to share and promote this so badly if the possibility of getting copied bothers you so much.

You bet! I'm still working out a good number of pieces to it, but I'm trying as hard as I can to include as many snopesters as possible. I've also got a working soundtrack going with it as well.

Well, while I'm getting everything I want, can my theme be "Princes of the Universe" by Queen?

And remember, I look exactly like this artist's rendering of me. Including the ability to float in space while grasping a sparkly veil.

I, however, do not look like a fish hat photographed on a Turkish-style carpet.

Not that I expect I'm in your FanFic.

Seaboe.

Amigone201, I'm not sure if that song will work, but I'll keep it in mind.

All the characters are based heavily on profiles here - for example everyone's screen name is their real name in the fic, with myself, my SO, and a certian politican being the only exceptions. It's also written as a fictional autobiography, which is where my viewpoint of everyone's posts, profiles, and facebook pages comes in.

I'm trying to use as much realism as possible, though there are obvious elements of fantasy. For example - Amigone201 is (as requested) an incredibly sexy attorney for the central company of the story. Also considering the picture, he gets to make a few characters (including mine) drop their jaws at first sight.

GalateaDancer, you are a choreographer / belly dancer in the city where it takes place, and I'm toying with "magic" ideas, since some characters call for "magic" to be used - for example, Auntie Witch actually practices witchcraft in addition to being a schoolteacher in the fic.

Not sure how curious everyone is, but right now I've got a skeletal storyline with a plot in place. Right now I'm focusing on really building up character histories, so when I start drafting I won't have to think about backgrounds every few lines. (Right now everything is in bullet points in Microsoft word, plus a Powerpoint presentation of all characters) As I mentioned, It's a fictional autobiography format, so I'm planning on physically writing while it "takes place" during the academic year of 2010-2011.

Ok...now I am curious...who would be interested in reading it if I were to post it somewhere?

I was kidding I didn't even think I'd get to look like the Calvin Klein model. Be glad you put a halt to it now, before I got to the trumpets and fireworks that precede my every entrance.

There are certain JavaScript codes that can take control of your computer (well, your mouse, anyway) by changing what happens when you right or left click on the page, among many other extremely obnoxious things.

Snopes uses a "disableselect" script on the main pages, which makes them difficult to navigate unless I'm running a selective script blocker because I keep thinking my mouse is broken . . .

Man, that's crazy!

In a good way.

I don't have any advice for you or Squishy on where to post fanfiction, but I will say that I'd like to read both your stories.

Finding a relevant livejournal community would be a good idea, especially one with mature readers. You don't want to get caught up in flaming and shipping wars. I've seen way too much fandom drama, and it's not fun.

Sorry to my Facebook friends who were just exposed to this, but stagemanager0610's project reminded me of this song:
