Default Help me make an awesome rock playlist

Since WBCN went off the air, I've been listening mostly to my iPod or Pandora. I had to re-do my iTunes library though, and have no playlists at the moment.

What I want is one huge playlist of rock music that I can put on shuffle, so there's still some element of surprise, but I can control what's in it. Generally the kind of thing I would've heard on WBCN, but not limited to radio-released single.

I'm thinking mostly grunge on forward, but I'm always open to suggestions. (My only absolute NO is Beastie Boys, sorry). Some basic ideas for bands: Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Greenday, Rise Against, Creed, STP, Audioslave, The Offspring, Three Days Grace, Seether, U2, Soundgarden, Guns N Roses, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed.

So, what I want is your suggestions of what songs from these artists, or any others you think would fit should be included. I won a lot of the music from those artists, and have some music gift cards, too. I'd be happy to publish my final copy too, if anyone's interested.

Okay, the only one of those that I'm familiar enough with to own is Guns N Roses. I am An Old. I'll go sit in my recliner and let the other youngsters help you with your project.

I have the opposite problem with a lot of them- I was too young to ever see some of my favorite bands live. Sucks.

I don't think I could only pick a few songs from some of those artists.

Seether, for example, I would just put every song, including "Careless Whisper," to my husband's dismay.
Alice in Chains, I'd need the whole first album.
Three Days Grace, I'd need most of the first couple albums. I haven't listened to the third enough to know what songs I'd want.

Jeez, I'm no help.

My problem exactly! I do have most of those albums, and listen to them, I just want to combine them. Seether songs I'll probably add are at least Fake It and Remedy. They were on my old playlist. Current favorite Three Days Grace are Over and Over and Animal I have become.

Alice in Chains- blah. No clue where to start. Some stuff off the new album too probably, at least Check My Brain.

Even though I'm supposed to be working, I thought about my favorites. I limited myself to 8 songs. So I would include: (song title & album)

Seether
Tied My Hands – Fragile
Gasoline – Disclaimer II
Love Her – Disclaimer II
Broken – Disclaimer II (the original one)
Never Leave – Karma & Effect
Plastic Man – Karma & Effect
Eyes of the Devil – Finding Beauty
Rise Above This – Finding Beauty

Alice in Chains
Down in a Hole – Dirt
Rooster – Dirt
When I Die – Dirt
Angry Chair – Dirt
Godsmack – Dirt
Would? – Dirt
Heaven Beside You – Alice in Chains
No Excuses – Jar of Flies

And I was wrong, "Dirt" is the Alice in Chains album that I adore. The new stuff is great, too, but I haven't listened to it enough yet.

If you're making a really big playlist, I'd put pretty much all of Dookie in it. Even on a medium sized playlist, I'd still put several songs from that album on it - Basket Case, Longview, When I Come Around, Welcome to Paradise.

I never really got too into many of the others you listed - although obviously there's a few can't miss ones that I know from Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and STP.

How about Tool (Sober)? Mother Love Bone (Capricorn Sister)? Temple Of The Dog (Pushin Forward Back and/or Hunger Strike)? Actually, I would suggest the entire TOTD release.

I don't know if you like these artists so these are just suggestions. Any mocking of my music choices will result in severe pouting.

- Blink 182
- Bush
- Garbage
- Gorillaz
- Kasabian
- Bif Naked
- Nine Inch Nails
- Our Lady Peace
- Shinedown
- Smile Empy Soul
- VAST

Forgetting shinedown was a horrible, horrible, mistake. In fact, after Day of Fire (who I didn't include only because I doubt any of you have heard of them but you SHOULD ) they're my favorite band to listen to at the moment.

My sister is a HUGE Blink 182 fan, wouldn't mind some of that on there. NIN definitely yes, too. Not a big Bush fan (find them kinda boring). The others I either haven't heard of, or don't recognize the name (radio + Pandora means I don't always see band names).,

WHAT?! WBCN went off the air?! Man, another part of my youth gone.

Don't forget to throw in Bodies by Drowning Pool, The Sickness and Shout by Disturbed, and No Leaf Clover by Metalica.

I wish I still had my WBCN t-shirt, circa 1982. I also had a WAAF t-shirt. I got both at the Strawberry's in Wellington Square in Medford.

How about some Staind?

(I can't remember the names of the songs I like on the first album and the speakers aren't working, so I can't listen to snippets, so I'm just giving you other stuff)

Epiphany - Break the Cycle
Outside - Break the Cycle
Fray - 14 Shades of Grey
Zoe Jane - 14 Shades of Grey

I knowwww. *sobs* I was so excited, moving here, that there was such a good rock station! WAAF... they do play good music, but they don't have the same definition of rock as me. You're as likely to hear Alice In Chains as, say, Dave Matthews Band.

Oh, I forgot to mention Trapt, too. They're not exactly my favorite band, but I'm going to be seeing them live on Halloween (with Day of Fire), so I'm excited about that.

When I was growing up, Boston had WBOS, WCOZ, WBCN, and WAAF (out of Worcester) playing what was then called "Album Oriented Rock" or "Adult Rock" in the early 80s. 'BOS actually bounced back and forth between AOR, pop, and country, and 'COZ (home of Doctor Demento) went Top 40 around my senior year in high school. Until I moved to Arizona in '93, every time I went to the Boston area to visit family, I would tune in 104.1 when I hit the I-89/I-93 interchange in New Hampshire.

Actually, in the 80s, WBCN was fairly eclectic with its playlist, too. It wasn't uncommon to hear Michael Jackson's "Beat It," but admittedly, they played up the Eddie Van Halen guitar solo.

I should have known something was wrong, when I was listening to the end of the Patriots-Broncos game on Sirius on my way home from work of Sunday afternoon, and the Patriots broadcast team referred to a new network.

Yup, 98.5, The Sports Hub. Most of the WBCN people moved over there, including the Toucher & Rich Morning Show.

The other problem with WAAF is, like you said, it's in Worcester, and I work in Taunton and it doesn't come in well there.

So I posed this question to Day of Fire- my favorite band I mentioned (who are obviously quite good about communicating with fans . The response:

Quote:
great question... "vasoline" -STP, "man in a box" -AIC, "hemorrage" -FUEL, "pretty noose"-Soundgarden, "in bloom"-nirvana, "everlong" -foofighters, "pure massacre" -silverchair, "hunger strike" -temple of the dog, "even flow" -pearl jam, "now you know" -full devil jacket, "what if" -creed, that's a good start
Definitely some good ones in there.

CSGirl, I agree with nearly all of the ones your friend suggested, except perhaps Nirvana & Pearl Jam, because I really don't like them.

May I suggest (if I'm not over my limit) more Silverchair? Essentially the whole album "Frogstomp?" Forget anything else they've put out, though. Ugh.

Also, Tantric. My favorites from them are:
Mourning - Tantric (actually, again, whole first album, but this is my favorite)
Love Song - The End Begins
Down & Out - The End Begins

I <3 Nirvana. Pearl Jam- the songs I like, I really like, otherwise I'm kinda meh.

And by "friend" you mean my favoritest band ever* (Day of Fire). I posted it on their Facebook, they responded with that- then reposted it saying I asked a good question and they wanted to know what everyone else thought! Getting tons of responses now, so cool.

I'll definitely check them both out. No limit, don't worry!

*Notice they suggested Full Devil Jacket? The lead singer was the lead singer of Full Devil Jacket, too. Again before my time, but I'm sure some of you have heard of them.
