Default Is anyone else playing Foursquare?

I thought it sounded lame at first but it's actually addictively fun. You check in at venues, usually bars and restaurants but I'm burbing it up with other places, and unlock badges. Like if you check in with 3 members otos in one night you get "playa, please." and if you have a local, you can be a mayor and get free beer. I'm working on being mayor of a nationally famous town because it would be so cool!

Anyway, my boss is my only friend and I don't want to look like a loser, so friend me if you're playing! (foursquare.com)

I'm playing from the Amish Country right now- I just add places. Can you play at all? Will it find you? Underpopulated areas are great cause you can be mayor everywhere!

It doesn't have LI either.

I downloaded the app, but it seems kinda crappy if you don't actually live in one of the supported cities. Is there really no interface for seeing all the nearby venues on a map? All it will do is show me a short list of the closest places to me, with nothing but addresses, no map. That's no fun. The iPhone has a good google maps integration, so there's really no reason they couldn't use maps. The location based feature is cool, but I'd like some sort of bigger picture view of the nearby venues and where they are. And to be able to see what's in a different part of town before I actually go there instead of only being able to see the local area. I don't see why they can't just open it up to the whole country instead of it forcing you to pretend to be from a supported city (with a popup reminder every time I open the app).

I must be getting old. I totally thought this would be about that game you played as a kid with a rubber kickball on a blacktop four square.

Looks like they listened to you.

I found it disappointing first too, but you can keep adding venues if you feel like it. I'm like the mayor of everywhere. It's definitely improvable, but I think the idea is so cool.

Just after I posted this I found Gowalla, which is similar but seems a little more aesthtically ambitious and less competitive. I think these types of apps in general are fun, but I think they'll get better. I'm going on a road trip tomorrow (a day one) so I'll probably go on a check-in spree.

I like Gowalla too because it's more inclusive of non-nightlife places, so you can get points and stuff for going into Costco and Target. You can with Foursquare, too, but it just seems a little more bar-centric.

Yeah, I would probably give it a shot if not for my pesky new diet. I can't go anywhere anymore, for the time being.

Me, too. And I'm not even that old!

Me as well. It was my favorite game as a kid. We used to dream about it becoming an Olympic event so we could think we could win a medal someday.

As for the OP, I could never do this. I don't have any friends within 600 miles and I don't go anywhere or do anything. Also it always seems that whatever I like is the exact opposite of what everyone else likes.
