I don't think anyone ever argued that they were. It's only that they're harder (read, almost absolutely impossible) to find on the very networks that were originally created to play them 24/7.

Agreed. I also tend to find that even though they do show music videos on MTV or VH1 or whatever they decide is the replacement for the music video channels, the big problem is that the videos tend to be really bad - though the music might be the issue. I tend to hate 90% of all modern music.

I usually make a quip in my head whenever I see a thread title and the one I had for this one was "Music videos aren't dead, despite MTV and VH1's best efforts!"

Not liking the music makes it really unlikely that you will like the video, doubly so if it's music you really find annoying or grating.

Yup, they've just moved to YouTube.

Also, when music videos are mentioned today, one must not forget to mention AMV's and other fan videos.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime_music_video (also, try googling AMV on YouTube)

Some of my favorite examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVb2y8nvKWw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrJAwCBbnuc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N534o...eature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUZdv...eature=related

And, for some strange reason, a lot of people has thought of the idea of making fan videos for Manowar songs using footage from 300:

If you can find it (it's frequently removed from YouTube) and can get over the "there are some things you don't joke about"-complex, I also recommend the video to Leonard Cohen's 'First we take Manhattan', with footage from the WTC incident and footage of bin Laden. Regardless of what you feel politically, the way the music fits the footage is pure art.

Face it, the music industry will have to learn that they will need to rely on their fans to do part of their marketing.

Thank god for Rage. It's the best thing about Australia. We have an *excellent* music show! Every Friday night, all night, new videos. (Almost) every Saturday night, it's hosted by an artist who's programmed their favourite videos.

I could not live without Rage. http://www.abc.net.au/rage/rage.htm
