Default I need some vibes, well wishes, anything

Hey everyone - I know it's been a while since I posted, mostly because work has me busy, which is a good thing.

Last night about 1:30am, I got a call from my sister that my 16 year old niece was being transported to Children's Hospital in Little Rock because her neck was broken in a car accident. It happened as she was coming home from working at the local haunted house. As far as I can gather, the person that hit the car she was riding in had just been cited for an accident the day before. She went in complaining of back and neck pain and x-rays show that the C7 vertebrae is broken. She is lucky, in that if it had been broken any closer to the spinal cord, she would have been paralyzed.

Although she sounded calm, I know my sister. She is upset, angry and no doubt going to be calling me as soon as she can to help her locate a lawyer. The driver of the car my niece was in also sustained injuries and word is the car is totaled. I am going to make sure that my sister does not do what my dad did when I was injured many years ago: settle. He settled with the insurance company for a low amount and regretted it later when he saw how much pain I was in after the accident. He told me many times had he known how much I was going to be suffering afterwards, he would have hired a lawyer to sue for more.

I guess the only good thing is that my niece should be covered as she has Sooner Care for her. I don't know if she could handle the weight of the bills, seeing as she is well below the poverty line as it is.

So any good thoughts her way would be appreciated.

Vibes! Many, many powerful vibes!

And thankful thoughts sent out into the universe that your niece was spared worse injury.

Thinking good vibes! Children's is an excellent hospital, she will be well taken care of.

I worked for a large law firm in Little Rock for many years. If you're sister starts to choose lawyers, I can try and help as much as possible. Or she can call my old firm, Dover Dixon Horne. They did multiple types of cases.

PM me if you need anything else.

Thank you Katikate. I will be PMing you later once I find out more details and see if I can get a good contact number for my sister. She doesn't have any minutes right now. She's also over 150 miles from home, as she'd been transported from the local hospital in Poteau.

I'll be thinking of you and your loved ones. Please have her get a lawyer. My ex talked me into settling on a car accident I was in, and I'm far worse off now then I was before. Sadly, ex also blew all the money. *HUGS* to you and your family...

First off, I hope your niece is okay and recovers well.

FWIW, the health insurance companies are likely to have subrogation policies--that is, they will get the auto insurance policies to pay for her health care costs. But her care most likely will be covered.

Was it established who was at fault in the accident?

I'll keep your neice and sister in my prayers. It's wonderful that she wasn't paralyzed.

What AnglRdr said-the auto insurance companies will be covering the bills. Not that it fixes her but it's at least one less thing to worry about. I hope she recovers quickly.

If it helps the worrying any-DH partially crushed 2 vertabrae, I think including that one) when he was 13 and other than some back pain, he's still doing well at 31.

Thank you all. I have a small update:

She is being admitted and will be there until at least Thursday. Right now they are assessing whether a brace will be enough for her or if surgery will be he way to go. Either way, it will be at least a year before she is fully healed.

Still trying to get info about how it happened.

IIRC, Children's Hospital, in addition to being an excellent facility, doesn't charge if the patient can't pay in full. So regardless of whatever games the insurance companies decide to play, at least hopefully it won't be the financial ruin of the family. Which seems almost crass to mention in the same light as a young body coming so close to paralysis, but financial ruin sure won't help her or the family any and is the last thing the parents need to be worrying about on top of their daughter's health.

Vibes and prayers to all. I hope she recovers fully.

Oh, and good on you for being on top of the settling issue. Don't feel in the least bit guilty for retaining a lawyer. People who sneer at those who bring lawsuits generally change that lame ass tune the first time they find themselves in a situation where they themselves have been caused harm by someone else and might not get any justice otherwise.l
