Ponder How to pretend you've seen a classic film

A survey suggests 58% of men and 38% of women lie about having seen classic films. So how might you go about bluffing that you have?

Here are six of the top 10 most fibbed about films with all of the necessary bluffage provided for you to able to get away with not having seen any of them.

Warning: Plot details are revealed below (in the link).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8299281.stm

Of those six, I've only seen The Great Escape, but there are plenty of other classic films I have not seen. For example, I have never seen any of the Star Wars films and only the first of the Star Trek films (despite liking science fiction). How should I bluff my way with these films?

What other classic films do people pretend they've seen? And how should they be able to fib about having seen them?

Only seen the Godfather, but so completely failed to enjoy it that I couldn't tell you anything about it. I don't know if it was my complete disinterest, poor recognition of names and faces, or just general stupidity, but I'm pretty sure I barely even followed what was happening at the time.

"Luke, I am your father," for the first. And don't worry about the second; there is no shame in that at all.

I've mentioned before my inability to watch The Godfather, but I don't try to fib about it.

I think most middle aged Americans should have seen most of the Rocky series, particularly II and IV, I to a lesser extent, and who knows about III. And I think everybody can do "Adrienne!" well enough to fake it.

As it happens, The Great Escape is the only one on the list that I haven't seen. I have seen all the Star Wars and Star Trek movies. As they say, the even-numbered Treks are the best (especially II).

Faking the Star Wars movies can be done with references to "I am your father" as AnglRdr says, and also speak of Leia in a bikini.

Star Trek II: "Kaaaaaaahn!!!"
Star Trek III: "That green-blooded son of a b*tch!"
Star Trek IV: "There be whales here!"

Lots of exclamation marks in those Star Trek movies.

ETA: I did see Rocky, but I haven't seen any of the sequels.

That's funny cause that's only one I haven't seen!

Star Wars=Luke is Darth's son, Yoda kicks ass & a backwards speaker is he, Ewoks & Jar Jar suck, the original 3 flicks are far superior to the new flicks, Boba Fett is a bounty hunter, the Wookie doesn't get a medal & that's about all I can think of now & I'm not even really a fan.

Star Trek=KHAN!!!!!

Sorry, Andrew, I'm not sure which I'm more baffled by - that you or anyone else might ever think any of the "Star Wars" films are classics, or that you think not having seen any of them will lessen anyone's opinion of you. Far as I'm concerned, your stock just went up!

No, please, let me.

Han shot first!!!!

That's all you need to know about Star Wars.

And if the dude whose talking to you starts geeking out over it, all you have to do is say, "that may be true, but Han shot first!!!"

And whatever you do, do not refer to him as Hans. Dead give away that you haven't seen it, or that you payed absolutely no attention while watching.

There are a lot of movies I've never seen -- but which I have seen chunks of on tv while channel-flipping. I've seen many important scenes from movies, but without the context. There are some movies, which I have seen in their entirety -- but only "piecewise," catching part of it one day, another part another day, etc.

This was how I first was familiar with Casablanca. I'd seen all of it -- but only in 10 or 15 minute chunks, in random order. Like a jigsaw puzzle. When I finally saw the movie, beginning to end (on a large screen!) it was quite interesting: I remembered every single scene, but I'd never really known what they meant.

The same is true for me for John Wayne in The Searchers and The Sons of Katie Elder. I've seen every minute of both films, but never actually seen them through from beginning to end.

So, flip those channels! You will gain a rough familiarity with a lot of movies, but be spared the tedium of actually watching them!

And...as for fibbing about it...why bother? Nobody loves a poseur!

Like Silas, I've only seen most of those in pieces-I think I've only seen The Great Escape, It's A Wonderful Life, and The Godfather in one sitting, and I think the only one I actually liked was Escape.

Actually there are lots of films I know I've seen (often on television, I've never really been able to afford going to films and I tend to rent them and forget to watch them) but have little recall of. The original Star Wars films-I know I've watched them repeatedly but I only have the vaguest recollection of the plots.

A friend of mine used "Hans Olowe" as an online game name. People thought he was German or Swedish.

The line is actually, "No, I am your father." Dead giveaway and major loss of points in the eyes of a Star Wars geek.

And I just want to ask, why does it matter whether or not you've seen a movie? Everyone has a finite amount of free time and not everyone likes movies, or at least not enough that they must see every one in the IMDB Top 250 list.

A bluffers guide is good for the basics, but if someone asks you whether you have ever seen a particular film it generally means that they are a fan - it's OK to say you haven't seen it; but if you try to bluff an interest you will soon get out of your depth.

And it is properly answered with, "No, that's not true. That's impossible!" The anguished, whiney "Nooooooooooooooo!" doesn't come until some time after that.

And I agree. I've never been tempted to pretend I have seen a movie when I haven't seen it.

I also don't understand why anyone would pretend to have seen a movie or read a book they haven't. What would be the point of that?

Of course that's easy for me to say - not only seen all 6 of the movies on the list, I actually have 4 of them in my collection. So clearly I have more time on my hands than folks with actual lives do.

I share this sentiment exactly, and trust me its nothing to do with stupidity. Despite some might tell you it's just not *that* intelligent of a film.

I remember reading a hilarious essay -- I wish I could remember the author's name -- about being a pseudo-intellectual. One of the keys was that you never read Shakespeare: you re-read Shakespeare. "I was re-reading Titus Andronicus the other day..."

There really are people like that! People so insecure, they have to pretend to a level of aesthetic sophistication they can't actually live up to.

Of the films on that list, I've only seen Gone With the Wind and It's a Wonderful Life in their entirety and I watched about the first 30 minutes of Taxi Driver (and that was more than enough--I really have zero interest in seeing the whole film). I have to confess to having no interest in The Godfather, The Great Escape or Citizen Kane.
With GWTW and Life, it's been so long ago that I actually watched either one that I could almost claim to having not seen them (and, no, despite its constant placement on the December TV schedule, I rarely feel compelled to put myself through watching Life).
