Default Bible question

(I am just so needy tonight, but I am no good at this at all)

This year's prom theme is:

"All I Ask Of You, A Masquerade" and translated into latin: Totus Ego Scisco Vestrum -- A Mascarade.

We bill it as a Christian Alternative Prom (even if secular music is played).

I need help finding a verse that goes with our theme. This is standard for every prom and goes on all the tickets/flyers/programs.

I was asked if I meant "all I ask of you" as in "do I mean everything" or "this one thing I ask of you (is a) masquerade".

I mean "this one thing I ask of you".

Can you help me locate a verse that would work with this? I am having no luck on biblegateway (and given my knowledge of verse/scripture, this does not surprise me).

I've been doing some computer Bible searching, and find the phrase "ask of you" only one place in the KJV. Mark 11:29 "And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things."

There are a handful of instances of the phrase "ask of" -- interesting instances are:

Psalms 2:8 "Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession."

Isaiah 58:2 "et they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God."

Mark 6:22-23 "And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. 23And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom."

John 11:22 "But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee."

John 15:16 "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you."

James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

Alas, I find no instances of "masquerade," or even of "mask." There are a few references to "disguise."

These are good. Thank you Silas! I'll take those references to "disguise" if you have them.

They aren't great, but are kind of fun:

1 Kings 14:1-2 "At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. 2And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people."

II Kings 22:30 "And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and enter into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and went into the battle."

II Chronicles 18:29 (retelling of above) "And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and will go to the battle; but put thou on thy robes. So the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went to the battle."

I've always found Judges/Kings/Chronicles easy to read. It reads very much like "modern" history, with a very clear narrative. The prophets are so much more anguished, but Chronicles could have been written by Ken Burns!

ETA: I'll put in a plug for "QuickVerse," a Bible study software package. I'm not a serious Bible student, but I do like to try to know a little about it. QuickVerse has a fairly nice search function.

Hmm, I am not so good at the particular verses, but how about

"Not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed[clothed] as spledidly as these."

I know it's in the gospels, but I forget which one.

Matthew 6:28 and following verses.

Quote:
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Frying Pan

I would be the worst prom planner in the history of promming and of planning. So I think I'd get stuck trying to choose between these 2:

Ezekiel 25:17 -- And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.

or the more flirty Ezekiel 23:30 -- There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.

And I don't understand why they never ask me to help!

Actually, Nick, that verse (and Turtle) makes sense for a masquerade ball.

And snoozn, I only get to do it because the group leader knows who and what I am, but also knows I will play by the rules. I do enough for this group that I've made a reputation based on my willingness to do for the kids (and only for the kids), which means follow rules (while working to get them changed slightly).

I LIKE the verse about genitals of donkeys..that's funny.

That makes me laugh because I was in Canton, Tx last weekend, which is one hundred acres of STUFF that people sell (huge flea market/bazaar thing that happens once a month) and there was anything you could imagine with bible verses on them.

But only certain ones. The same several ones over and over. I in my usual contrary fashion wondered what would happen if I opened up a booth with some of those OTHER kind of bible verses in it. I was thinking of the one where Esther cuts off the king's head, or where Onan has himself a little hand party, but that donkey one is pretty good.

I don't know about the 'this one thing I ask of you', but it reminded me of this verse:

"But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." - Luke 10:42

Perhaps this could be the response of the one thing asked?

I am just so not into scripture that I have no idea if something would work or not. I've been sending all your ideas to the group leader (she usually picks the scripture), so hopefully she comes up with something.

I must have a censored version...mine reads, "I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone awhoring after the heathens, and because thou art polluted with their idols."

I'm pretty sure that didn't happen in Esther, but it does in the deuterocanonical Book of Judith, chapter 13.

How about:

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another" John 13:34 KJV

How about this:

Quote:
But Jael, Heber's wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died.
Judges 4:21

It would discourage post-prom hanky-panky.

Here's one:

"And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God"

-- Micah 6:8

I know this one as a song, which is now stuck in my head.
