Skull Edgar Allan Poe finally getting proper funeral

Quote:
BALTIMORE — For Edgar Allan Poe, 2009 has been a better year than 1849. After dozens of events in several cities to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, he's about to get the grand funeral that a writer of his stature should have received when he died.

This is, of course, getting a lot of press here in Baltimore. Jerome was on one of the news shows last night, along with an actor portraying Poe (not John Astin, darn it). Poe seems pleased that he's finally getting his due. I wish I could go, it sounds like it's going to be fun. Unfortunately, DH has to work and I'll be gone all day Saturday at a conference, so I have to stay home with the kids. But I'm sure there will be plenty of photos and video available afterward.

And this quote made me :

Quote:
Baltimore has a decided advantage over the other cities that lay claim to Poe, notes BMA director Doreen Bolger. "We have the body," she said.

It sounds like they did a bangup job. There was a story on NPR about it this morning, including excerpts of a mashup tape of The Raven being read by Lisa Simpson and Vincent Price, among others.

RIP, Mr. Poe. Thank you for the stories, especially Murder in the Rue Morgue, without which we may never have had Sherlock Holmes or Miss Marple or Peter Wimsey or Adrian Monk . . .

Annabel Lee has a large place of honor in my living room. I laid it out in a pretty font and surrounded it with some framed raven silhouettes.

Was he really regarded as a writer of significant stature at the time he died, or is that primarily a posthumous reputation? As I recall, during his lifetime he was more known for being a literary critic than for being an author in his own right.
