We received a warning in our office building that an elevator did exactly that -- doors opened on the 35th floor with the elevator itself on the 34th.

I think it is possible to force a door without the car being there. It involves prying, though, banging wouldn't do it unless there was some problem. This story is so short on details, though, I can't tell if the guy was prying the doors, or just running his chair into them, or what.
