44 Tons of Rotting Meat Stink up South Dakota Town

Quote:
Behind the freezer doors at a meat plant mysteriously abandoned by its owner, the 44 tons of bison meat managed to hold its own for months, masked by the brutal chill of two South Dakota winters.

Once the power was cut and spring thaw arrived, nature took over. And enough rotting meat to fill a high school gym did exactly what you'd expect: It stank.

I wonder how many people we'll become vegetarians as the result of this?

I remember we once pitched camp downwind of what turned out to be a ripe moose carcass - come sunrise it put a serious hurt on your nose, can't imagine what 44 rotting bison must have done to that wee town

Stories like that certainly reaffirm my descision to be veg.

The guy that abandoned the warehouse sounds like a real piece of work.

On a much smaller scale, there was a grocery store in Bryan TX that did this a few years ago with appalling results. What was so sad is that there were so many people in town that could have benefitted from the food. The food back would have taken the donation and been able to help so many needy people. This is the case here, too. Yeah, I get that he's closing but what about hungry people? That bison could have fed a lot of families in need.

Doesn't strike me in this case that yer man involved is the sort to be thinking about the charitable angle...
