Default Glenn Beck Praises New Muse Album - Muse Asks for a Retraction

Quote:
By the end of the broadcast Beck was contacted by representatives of Muse wanting him to retract his statement. Beck jokingly apologizes for ruining their street credibility and then tells his audience to never listen to them or buy the records.

That is so awesome! And coincidentally, I just picked up the new Muse CD today - now I'm even happier that I bought it.

Oh, for the love of ...........
Muse have got to be the most asinine bunch of morons I've ever read about. It's one thing for an artist to disapprove of a politician's use of their music (as with Springsteen back in the 1980s or Heart and Don Henley last year), but to actually go to the extreme of telling someone you don't want their praise or their recommendation is just beyond stupid.
I've got no problem with Muse's dislike of or distaste for Glenn Beck, but as the music industry in in dire straits today with CD sales continuously dropping (nearly every single week, Billboard notes that the current week's and the year-to-date CD sales are lower than this time last year with only an occasional uptick because of some major name's new release), it's just asinine to willingly blow off potential new fans because you don't like the person who recommended your latest project.
Muse need to realize it's not up to them to decide who can and who can't like their music. Personally, I thought their Black Hole and Revelation songs, "Knights of Cydonia" and "Starlight", were okay but I wasn't impressed enough to actually buy the CD. And, given this little stunt, I don't really think I'd care to waste my money on their new CD. Perhaps they'd like me to send in an application just to make sure I'm "acceptable" enough to listen to their works.
And, no, I don't particularly care for Glenn Beck myself and I wouldn't cry if the SOB suddenly found himself wearing a concrete block around his feet and dumped off a ship over the Marianas Trench but, whether you like him or not, he DOES have an audience that MIGHT have actually took him up on the recommendation. Of course, if Muse were to do the same after getting a "thumbs up" from Oprah, I might be a bit less harsh on the group.

I like them, but I can't seem to get into their new album. It seems like all the Muse songs that I like are on Absolution. That's a really good album. That and their cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off You.

Wait; you're criticising them for money not being their top priority?

I had never bought a Muse album before this... I bought it specifically in response to them telling Glenn Beck to take a long walk off a short pier.... I wonder how many other people did the same.

Well what's the point of playing in a band? Surely to play to as many people who appreciate your music as possible. If you just want to play for your own enjoyment then you can do so in a practice room and play the occasional pub and small club. The fact that Muse go on big tours makes me assume they are a bums-on-seats band...

And this is a nice bit of free publicity for their current tour and album.

Or... you know... actually really, really smart marketing depending on the social views of their target audience. I would hazard a guess that the overlap between Glenn Beck listeners and Muse fans would be tiny.

I think Muse's actions here have done more to endear themselves to their existing fan base and those most likely to become fans than having said nothing to Beck

Where precisely was the claim made that they thought it was up to them? They asked him to retract his praise -- not to stop liking them.

That's okay, it looks like at least one person in this thread alone has counterbalanced this already.

Why? Do Oprah and Beck espouse similar views?

Be disappointed all you like, I happen to think it was pretty cool in a rock 'n' roll kinda way and give them props for it.

Plus, look at all the additional publicity this "stunt" has gotten them. I don't watch Beck (Tried. Can't.), and I was only vaguely aware that Muse had a new album out. This is the fifth website/blog on which I've read about their slam of Beck. So, perhaps their move is sheer genius; rather than moronic or asinine.

Using their representatives to ask him to retract a statement is a "stunt"?

1) Muse are awesome.

2) Beck is a dickhead.

3) Therefore Muse are even more awesome.

4) If you don't agree, kiss my arse.

The Resistance is a fantastic album, the only other by them I find equally appealing is Black Holes and Revelations. They deserve all the attention they can get, especially after their fantastic VMA performance was overshadowed by Kanye's jackassery.

Hey, I hate Oprah, too. But why would it be a 'stunt' if they did it to Glenn but you'd see things differently if they did it to Oprah?

Silly...because one is a fear mongering, bigoted, hate merchant with poor literacy skills and a penchant for saying the absolutely worst possible thing at the worst possible time and the other one is Glenn Beck.

Wait...Glenn Beck is the black lady with the talk show right?

Glenn Beck is a low life fear mongering scumbag. Oprah, wether you love or hate her (put me in the hate camp) at least has credibility and dignity. Besides Oprah is beloved by many and to do something like that would certainly hurt your fan base.

Absolution is still my favorite Muse CD, although it does not contain my favorite Muse song (Supermassive Black Hole). But taken as a whole, I like it the best.

One of my friends described Resistance as "Radiohead meets Queen meets Styx meets ABBA, meets 70s David Bowie meets Chopin/Debussy/Theatrical Movie Trailer Music with an Orwellian undertone of 1984." Which pretty much describes everything I like about it.

Well, yes. It's entirely possible that they're just playing to their target market segment. But it's still funny

Did nobody see the link I posted? Beck was making a joke. Muse never commented on him being a fan.

I saw it Ana, but it's only because I'm your biggest fan. . . and no, I won't print a retraction.
